With new Chief Executive Officer Steve Alleyne at the helm, members of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) can be assured the organisation will continue to work in their interest and for the betterment of their lives. This, Alleyne conveyed, was his main reason for taking on the role he assumed in July last year. Old wounds were reopened on Sunday when gunshots rippled across Golden Rock in The Pine, St Michael. While adults were among the physically injured, and residents said the incident reminded them of Randy The Nut Man Selman’s murder in 2020, there is a growing concern about the mental health of the children who were traumatised after they had to run for their lives. Residents said that around 5 p.m. a motorist drove into the densely-populated community and multiple shots were fired across a “pasture” where a play park and sheds are located. Coreen Selman-Harte, mother of The Nut Man, said many people in the community were impacted. (Video by Jameel Springer)
Barbados should have its first multimillion-dollar hospice care facility for the terminally ill this year. Trustee and public relations officer for the Barbados Association for Cancer Advocacy, Jessica Odle-Baril, said a site had been identified but it would still be some time before it was a reality. Addressing a media conference yesterday at The Sands Barbados in Worthing, Christ Church, Odle-Baril said the cost of the planned 14-bed hospice was around $5 million. They have raised around $150 000 so far but plans are for fundraising to go into full gear, with the diaspora also being called on for help. (Video by Shanice King)
