Every year, World Diabetes Day is recognized globally on November 14. This year’s theme, “Diabetes and Well-being”, underscores the importance of ensuring that individuals living with diabetes can live a healthy and fulfilling life with equal opportunities for happiness and well-being. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 422 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that 11.8% of Saint Lucians live with diabetes. Based on the 2020 Saint Lucia’s STEPS Survey data indicates that around 15.9% of adults in Saint Lucia have increased blood sugar levels.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs welcomed a delegation from the World Bank to Saint Lucia to provide technical support to accelerate the implementation of Health Systems Strengthening Project (HSSP) and the OECS Regional Health Project. The mission taking place from November 11 – 15 entails a consultation workshop for Health Financing Policy and Strategy, a review of the progress of the PBF Pilot Program to support its institutionalization, progress review of the SMARTing of health facilities and a review of the Annual Workplan and Budget of the OECS Regional Health Project. During the mission, the team will set a clear and detailed plan for meeting the project timelines and milestones, in addition to determining ways to resolve any challenges that can affect the accelerated implementation of the projects.

Saint Lucia is currently undertaking consultations to develop more ambitious climate action commitments for the next five years. The National Climate Change Committee has reconvened as part of the process to review the country’s Updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0). An NDC is a country’s climate pledge under the Paris Agreement to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change impacts.
