St Lucia welcomed LIAT 2020's first scheduled passenger flight with much fanfare on Tuesday, including a water cannon salute as it landed at the George F.L. Charles Airport. Theresa Goodwin reports.

LIAT 2020 has commenced scheduled passenger flights, in a major milestone for regional air travel. The new airline's maiden passenger flight, GA291, lifted off from VC Bird International Airport and landed safely in St Lucia Tuesday afternoon. The development heralds bright days ahead for the partnership between Antigua and Barbuda's Government and Nigeria's largest private carrier, Air Peace. Raghib Apparicio reports.
The Government will be making another move to provide the promised 32 per cent compassionate payment to former employees of LIAT1974 Limited, in line with the shareholding the Government had in the now defunct carrier. Prime Minister, Hon. Gaston browne has announced that his administration will earmark millions of dollars to pay a portion of this amount. Prime Minister Browne also says the Government is prepared to negotiate directly with the workers.
Tourism Minister Hon. Charles Fernandez is bullish on the prospects of an improvement in regional tourist arrivals with the start of scheduled passenger flights by LIAT 2020.
