Representatives of the Unity Workers Union and the National Union of Public Workers spoke to the media after a tour of Winston Scott Polyclinic. Workers have complained about conditions in the facility. Cleaning will be conducted over the weekend and it is scheduled to reopen on Monday. The Salvation Army continues to see an increased demand for its services. Divisional Commander Major Robert Pyle said it’s only with the help of corporate Barbados that they are able to help meet the needs. He was speaking at the Salvation Army’s annual Massy Christmas luncheon at Reed Street, Bridgetown, which saw scores of people – young and old –lining up to get a takeaway meal. More than $7 million was added to the public coffers yesterday as six properties were sold when the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) held its third auction for delinquent properties for 2023. There was barely any standing room in the auction, which was held at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St Michael. Bids came in at a rapid pace, even for properties on which the bidding started at over a million dollars. As Barbados focuses on driving growth, work is ongoing to ensure its economy is more resilient. According to Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Ryan Straughn it involves several measures, including renewable energy to mitigate against shocks related to fossil fuel prices. He says the country has been running primary surpluses over the last few years, with the exception of the COVID period. Minister Straughn further revealed that as Barbados closes out this financial year, it is on track to have a 3.5% primary surplus. He says the efforts will enhance the island's profile. Minister Straughn was at the time participating virtually in the 24th Parliamentary Session of the World Teen Parliament.
