Reigning BSSAC Champions Combermere have sent a signal of intent ahead of the local 2025 athletics season. The Boys and Girls from Waterford captured the 2024 Dasani-Powerade Rivaldo Leacock Championship today at the Lester Vaughan School. Competing in the seven-school two-day meet, Combermere totalled 476 points to finish ahead of the Lodge School on 446 and Coleridge and Parry 346. The St. Michael School were fourth with 245 points and hosts Lester Vaughan fifth with 241. CBC's Anmar Goodridge-Boyce reports on some of the action. A fourth community football hub was launched yesterday at the Passage Road ground by the Barbados Football Association. It's part of the continued roll out of the National Peace Programme in collaboration with the Government of Barbados. The BFA is contributing to the Peace Programme by conducting on-field sessions of basic football skills, along with off-field sessions which include social media awareness and conflict resolution, that are designed to educate, inspire, and empower young people. These hubs can also be found in Pinelands, Deacons and Eden Lodge. Leading the project is BFA Special Projects Coordinator Amanda James, who says the BFA is delighted to collaborate with the NPP and local communities. With the 16 Days of Activism in full swing, a women's group has called attention to other forms of gender-based violence creeping into Barbadian and Caribbean societies. President, Marlene Hewitt says they've never been seen before. Further insight was provided on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Women's groups meanwhile have been working together during the 16 Days of Activism to sensitise Barbadians about gender-based violence and how it impacts society The National Organisation of Women says it's critical women's groups join forces, especially at this time. President, Melissa Savoury-Gittens acknowledges the various organisations have their own mandates but notes by coming together, the impact will be greater. Soroptimist International is onboard with an upcoming community outreach about gender-based violence come December 7. President, Peta-Lee Blackman says their bus tour will make stops in Warrens, Holetown and Speightstown. Barbados has seen a reduction in agricultural yield due to drought and land degradation. That's the word from Minister of the Environment, Adrian Forde. He says the decline was evident on island between 2000 and present. Minister Forde's comments came during the 16th Session of the Conference of Parties of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification or COP16 being held in Saudi Arabia.
