Although Hurricane Beryl contributed to the postponement of a marquee pride event last month, there was no raining on the Pride Parade yesterday. From around 3:30 p.m. scores of individuals from the LGBT community and various allies paraded through Bridgetown to culminate Pride Month, which is officially celebrated in June. The parade was first scheduled to be held on June 30 with Luke Lascaris, chairman of Equals, the parade organisers, saying the spectacle was a way to celebrate the community’s achievements and continue its advocacy. He acknowledged that some people may not appreciate the significance of the celebration, because they believe that the community did not face discrimination but Lascaris said that was not the case. With triathlete Matthew Wright already in Europe, along with 400-metre runner Sada Williams, the other two athletes on team Barbados for the Paris Olympic Games have also arrived in that part of the world to continue preparations. Speaking during Sunday's 'The People's Business' talk show on CBC TV8, the BOA's senior office administrator Gail Craig-Archer, said swimmer Jack Kirby arrived in France while sprinter Tristan Evelyn touched down in Italy last night. Meanwhile, Wright who is in Wales, says he has already switched his training to prepare for a mid-week triathlon. Olympic Games Analyst Michael Jules noted that outside of Williams, the realistic goals of the other athletes will not be to medal. First Vice President of the Athletics Association of Barbados, Dr. June Caddle, urged Barbadians to look beyond the medals. There are new rules to ensure customers have ease of access and transparency when conducting business with banks like opening and closing accounts. The mandatory Central Bank of Barbados' Market Conduct Guidance for Commercial Banks and Finance Companies which came into effect last Friday was officially launched today. They address five areas which also include customer complaints. Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Kevin Greenidge explains the toolkit speaks to the licensees under the Central Bank. He says consultations were conducted before a draft Bill was created, and those with disabilities were also included. A phased approach will be adopted on a case-by-case basis for those banking institutions that now have to implement aspects of the guidelines. Senior Director with responsibility for Bank Supervision Cheryl Greenidge urges customers to fully exhaust all avenues with respect to disputes. She says they should send as much detail to her department so that when they engage with the financial institution, they can do so from an informed position. However, she made it clear once legal action is taken, the Central Bank will not intervene. Customers are asked to visit the bank's website to get all relevant information. Eighty underachieving male students who are about to enter secondary school will benefit from this year's Babb's Reading Clinic. Chief Education Officer, Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, is encouraging the children who will receive free instructions in basic reading skills, reading comprehension techniques, team building exercises and counselling, to put what they learn into practice. Ms Archer-Bradshaw was addressing today's opening ceremony of the clinic which will be held at the Barbados Community Community (BCC) over the next five weeks. Meanwhile, founder of the reading clinic, Dr. Astra Babb, is extending gratitude to the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Maria Holder Memorial Trust, Scotiabank Barbados, and the Barbados Community College for helping to sponsor the initiative. Dr. Babb is stressing that the teaching of reading is a specialised area which if misunderstood can lead to serious damage to a student and inhibit their learning capacity.
