In Independence Square, the sounds of tuk band music filled the air as entertainment was provided ahead of the official start of the Crop Over Festival. Barbadians were also able to witness the Schools' Landship competition and the finals of the second annual Inter-schools Heritage Games competition where students faced off in Potta and Warri. The St. Michael School copped first place in the Warri competition and West Terrace in Potta. Chief Cultural Officer, Andrea Wells says the events celebrate Barbados' cultural heritage. Sofia Allsopp is a 16-year-old basketballer who made a name for herself as the lone female playing for the boys’ basketball team at Queen’s College. Henry “Bigga” Miller, who is a Barbadian-born, United States-based sports scout discovered Sofia one evening while she was scrimmaging and put measures in place to award her a scholarship at New Hampshire High School in the United States where she continues to develop her skills with hopes of embarking on a professional career. Third vice-president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Felicia Dujon is of the view that the fishing industry must be safeguarded from another disaster similar to what occurred with Hurricane Beryl. Dujon said in order to prevent a repeat of Monday’s destruction there was a dire need for greater infrastructure and development of policies. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says her administration is prepared to amend the Bail Act to prevent murder accused from being a threat to society. In making the announcement, she's also warning perpetrators she will not allow them to hold the country to ransom. Ms. Mottley says it will be part of efforts to address the crime situation across the island. She was speaking at a press conference at Ilaro Court this afternoon. Government has also agreed to the establishment of a serious organised crime unit to be manned by the Barbados Police Service. While acknowledging community policing remains a critical component in the crime fighting efforts, Prime Minister Mottley says Government has also agreed to deploy the Police Band in communities. She says members of the Band will complement the ten community officers already in the field. The Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, CDEMA is stressing the need for Coordination in response efforts as countries and others extend a helping hand to nations affected by Hurricane Beryl. Executive Director Elizabeth Riley revealed the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has expressed a preference for cash donations. There has been a change in location for the Scotia Bank Junior Monarch Semifinals. The juniors were initially to face the judges on Sunday at the National Botanical Gardens. However, Cultural Officer, Music Education at the National Cultural Foundation, Kevin Moore says the semifinals will now be held at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. Mr. Moore says rehearsals are ongoing and despite losing some days to inclement weather, they will be ready for the semifinals come Sunday. He says the slate of semifinalists includes some newcomers.
