Some boat owners are still waiting for their damaged or sunken vessels to be pulled out of the waters at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex. Even more are waiting to be told how much it will cost to repair their vessels. The process of removing boats has been slow as there is no haul out facility and only one cradle available since the closure of the Shallow Draught two years ago. However, one of Barbados' leading boat builders and fibre glass experts Malcolm Thompson says they need not worry. Rachelle Agard caught up with Mr. Thompson at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex today and filed this report. A daring escape by a prisoner ended with his recapture in dramatic fashion. The incident occurred this morning when 31-year-old inmate Mario Austin, formerly of Blackman's Tenantry, St. Joseph, had just arrived at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the Prison bus. Leader of the Opposition Ralph Thorne is suggesting that Government revisit the country's bail laws. He is saying that Government amending legislation to stop the judicial system from granting bail to murder accused would be a legal response to the spike in serious crimes on the island. The three Squares in Bridgetown will come alive this Saturday as Crop Over will be officially launched in the City. The Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and 50th Anniversary Tent was shifted to Golden Square Freedom Park, Independence Square and National Heroes Square after the National Botanical Gardens was deemed too wet following recent rains from a tropical wave and Hurricane Beryl. Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts, made the disclosure this morning in Golden Square Freedom Park as workmen were busy preparing. The wet conditions have also forced the NCF to find a new venue for Sunday's Scotiabank Junior Monarch semi-finals. Fresh off hosting the world for the T20 World Cup, Barbados is at fever pitch as it gears up for the 50th anniversary of the Crop Over Festival. The Festival kicks off with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and the 50th Anniversary Tent set for Saturday. The marquee event for Crop Over 2024 is coming to Bridgetown with activities happening in the 3 main squares - Golden Square Freedom Park, Independence Square and National Heroes Square. The procession will begin from the Pelican Lifestyle Centre at 3:00 p.m. and head towards National Heroes Square, where the official ceremony will take place at 4:00 p.m. Corporate Communications Specialist at the National Cultural Foundation, Toni Yarde says several Sweet Limes were staged and last Friday saw the hosting of the first Bridgetown Craft Market. She says there's excitement about the season ahead. Ms. Yarde was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados, and says the NCF is pleased with changes to this year's edition of the Crop Over Festival, including the popular Bridgetown Market. Power restoration efforts continue in Grenada following the blow to its electricity network.. St. Patrick was identified as the parish badly impacted by Hurricane Beryl. While progress has been made, Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell says the power company should be able to restore 90 to 95 percent of affected customers in Grenada. The situation is however different for Hurricane affected Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Jamaica is the latest Caribbean country to feel the wrath of Hurricane Beryl as it passed south of that island. Significant damage to property was reported and thousands were left without power after Beryl battered the island with hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and storm surges. Barbados' Eboni Atherley is the under-19 Caribbean Junior Girls Squash Champion after a straight games win over Jamaica's Katherine Risden in the final last evening. Playing unbeaten throughout the entire competition in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, the final was one of her most challenging encounters. Ann-Marie Bruke shares that match. As the island continues to feel the effects of a tropical wave, the Barbados Meteorological Services has received no reports of major flooding. This confirmation from Meteorologist Jonathan Alleyne who says the wave brought intense periods of rainfall and gusty winds. He says rainfall accumulation of three inches has been recorded mainly in the eastern and central portions of the island, while just under two inches was recorded in Bridgetown. According to the forecaster the wave, which started to affect the island around midnight should end some time tomorrow. Farms across Barbados have not been impacted by the passing of Hurricane Beryl. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul tells CBC News that he is yet to receive any negative reports from farmers following the passage of the weather system. With forecasters predicting an active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season which has only just begun, Mr. Paul is encouraging farmers to do what is necessary to improve and protect their infrastructure. Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs Wilfred Abrahams is thanking all members of the National Emergency Operations Centre who spent hours at the Department of Emergency Management guiding the country through the passing of Hurricane Beryl. Minister Abrahams says these individuals representing various agencies left their families at home to make sure authorities were in a position to manage emergency situations. The Minister also thanked all other essential workers who gave their service during the national shutdown. The Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is reporting six of its member states were impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl as it moved across the Windward Islands. Countries affected included Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. While Dominica reported minimal damage, Executive Director Elizabeth Riley says islands in the southern Grenadines bore the brunt. She says assessment in member states are still ongoing. CDEMA has since activated its Regional Coordination Plan along with its Regional Coordination Centre. Focusing on assessment for Barbados so far, Ms. Riley says damage was reported to homes and infrastructure along the island's coasts.
