Members of the homeless community are being encouraged to seek shelter as Hurricane Beryl approaches. The advice from President of the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness, Kemar Saffrey. He is also urging members of the public to direct homeless people they encounter to the nearest shelter. Mr. Saffrey says his shelter in Spry Street, the City has capacity for up to 90 people. He says they are ready to accommodate homeless people. As Barbados braces for impending weather within the next 48 hours, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is urging Barbadians to be prepared and be vigilant. Tropical Depression 2 formed in the eastern Atlantic this afternoon, and is forecast to affect the island late Sunday night (June 30) into Monday (July 1). In a video statement tonight, the Prime Minister says she met with various Government departments and agencies earlier today to ensure they are ready for any eventualities. She has also urged Barbadians to look out for others in their communities. The City of Bridgetown branch of the Barbados Labour Party is on board with a community-led initiative to raise funds to assist the families displaced by the recent massive fire in Wellington Street. The owners of Deonte Exquisite Lighting and Dirty Kicks 246 have banded together to organise charity football matches set for July 2 at the Wildey Astroturf. Over 50 people and more than 15 homes were impacted by the fire. Communication Consultant with The City of Bridgetown constituency, Ziggy Marshall expects the assistance will go a long way for the fire victims. Barbadians interested in contributing to the cause can do so through the charity, made it against the odds. A top cultural official is reporting signs of heightened interest in the number of children anticipated to play mass this Crop Over. Chief Cultural Officer at the National Cultural Foundation Andrea Wells says the NCF, through its expanded programmes celebrating the creativity of children at the community level over the years, are showing signs of bearing fruit. She made the remarks as the NCF accepted a monetary donation of 50 thousand dollars from the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust. It happened during the launch of the Junior Masquerade Project in association with Abeds, at the Erdiston Special Needs School. Ms. Wells says they continue to target and celebrate creative children and welcome the growth exhibited over the past two decades.
Award-winning poet and playwright Winston Farrell is calling for the introduction of a national theatre. According to Farrell, the move towards developing a national theatre is necessary to preserve the country's cultural form. He was speaking at a night with Modern Day Griots produced by the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, (BTMI). Meanwhile, Media Consultant Dale Forde is calling for more to be done to conserve the country's history, especially at a community level. QC booked their place after defeating the St. Michael School 10-5, while HC got the better of Christ Church Foundation 11-2 at the Wildey Gym. Meantime in the under-15 tournament, Springer Memorial advanced to the semi-final with a victory over Queen's College. Springer beat QC 26-17, SMS edged Foundation 19-18. It was a golden performance for national ice skater Priyanka Sharma. At the Ice Arena Friendship Cup 2024 in Puebla, Mexico. Skating in the senior division, Sharma delivered an almost flawless routine to come away with the gold medal. Speaking to CBC Sports she said it was one of her best performances to date. Up next for Sharma is the USA Figure Skating Association's Skate Milwaukee event, from July 8-12. Barbados has told the Organisation of American States that citizens of this hemisphere rely on it to provide solutions to crises impacting member countries. Director General of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Donna Forde shared the challenges of small island developing states before a plenary session - part of the ongoing 54th General Assembly of the OAS in Paraguay. She says Barbados anticipates the endorsement of the goals of the OAS will be met with the commensurate support of members individually, collectively and financially. Ms. Forde says the solutions must be proactive, visionary and strategic. Barbados also added its voice to the international chorus condemning the attempted coup in Bolivia. Focusing on Haiti, Ambassador Forde urged the OAS to continue to play a supporting role in that country's development. She says Barbados is pleased the situation in Haiti is turning the corner with the installation of President Garry Conille and his government.
