As the renewable energy sector evolves, members of the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA) were recently reminded of the importance of safety in the workplace. Director and Chair of the Technical and Technology Committee at BREA Neilsen Beneby says this was done through a safety workshop on PV installation, held exclusively for members. A cross-section of stakeholders in the industry attended the interactive session titled 'Safety First'. Emphasis was placed on the notion that safety is everyone's responsibility in the work place, as well as risk assessments and identification of hazards. Participants were involved in live demonstrations and use of the correct personal protective equipment. Mr. Beneby, who is also Director at Emera Caribbean Renewables Ltd., says later this year BREA intends to host workshops on power purchase agreements, which will be very important to investors as the sector evolves. Participant Karlquisha Sargeant from Innogen Technologies, says she signed up for the workshop to add to her expertise on safety training. Everything happened so quickly, the 70-year-old was unable to save anything from her room and ran outside, calling the neighbours. They, too, could not save anything. (Video by Reco Moore)
