The influx of sargassum seaweed is having a major impact on Barbados' flying fish industry. While stock assessments have not been conducted, Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox says landings of flying fish have decreased by 51% since the start of sargassum inflows in 2011. She says this is a significant development and links it to climate change. The information was shared during an Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea at the United Nations in New York. Dr. Cox also queried how other countries confronted the matter, and perceptions related to fishing and eating fish, particularly among young people. The Caribbean Development Bank wants Barbados and the region to take steps to ensure countries do not fall into what it termed an ageing trap, where they lose more workers faster than they can attract. Statistician Dindial Ramrattan says while migration is critical, the Caribbean is identified as one of the fastest ageing societies in the world. With advances in health that have assisted in lowering the death rate, it was found that birth rates are falling. He recommended attention be placed on engaging with the workforce. Mr. Ramrattan was at the time presenting a study on gender differentials in the job market of the region. The study also found males and females are reporting the same level of concern as it relates to equity of opportunity and promotion, along with fear of discrimination. Succession planning is needed across the business sector. And in doing so, it will reduce instances of outsourcing employment. It's the view of Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry's President James Clarke. He was speaking during a question and answer segment at the presentation of the 2023 Economic Outlook Survey. He added this process could start from the interview, as it is always less expensive to recruit from within as they are familiar with the business. BCCI's Chairman of the Economic Advisory Committee Christopher Sambrano agrees with Mr. clarke. however, he says in unique circumstances hiring outside is critical if competing internationally . If the region is to combat current issues faced by shortages in the global supply chain, CARICOM integration is needed more than ever. So says Chairman of the Economic Advisory Committee of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Christopher Sambrano. He was speaking during the presentation of the 2023 Economic Outlook Survey where over 50 companies across 11 sectors participated. Additionally, Mr. Sambrano says while there are concerns about tariffs and other protections, regional governments need to band together and offer the requisite insurance for those willing to engage at that level.
