The Department of Archives will be closed to the public until further notice as the mop up process continues after a major fire on Monday night into Tuesday morning. Earlier today, members of staff and the Barbados Fire Service returned to the compound. Work to address mold and other environmental issues at the Wesley Hall Junior School is expected to begin on Friday. Chairman of the Caribbean Development Bank's Board of Governors and Canada's Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, has announced new financial support for countries in the region. Mr. Hussen says Canada is also interested in helping with technical and vocational training, which he believes can help young peple obtain the skills necessary to access the jobs of the future. He adds they've heard the region's call for the reform of international financial institutions. The Caribbean Development Bank will be taking a critical look at its future direction as it seeks to remain relevant. This was revealed by Acting President Isaac Solomon. He was addressing the opening of the Bank's 54th Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors underway in Canada. Mr. Solomon notes the CDB began in 1969, when challenges like digital literacy, generative artificial intelligence and climate change were not on the development agenda. He has stressed the importance of member states and the Bank's developmental partners working together to achieve higher and sustained economic growth, and dentified a number of key areas which countries of the region must focus on. Barbados has raised its concerns about deep sea fishing and the likely impact on fisheries stock at a high level United Nations meeting. The matter was brought to the fore by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary with Responsibility for Climate Change, Small Island Developing States and Law of the Sea, Senator Elizabeth Thompson. She was at the time participating in the 24th Meeting of the United Nations Open-Ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea. The Barbados delegation also included the Director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit, Dr. Leo Brewster and Chief Fisheries Officer Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox. Barbados' Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong has recommended the institutionalising and expansion of the Eminent Persons Group. The suggestion was put forward during a forum titled "Haiti Now: Development Priorities and Interventions" organised by the Caribbean Development Bank. The three-member group consists of former Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Perry Christie; former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Bruce Golding; and former Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Dr. Kenny Anthony. He wants the group that was appointed by CARICOM Heads of Government to be transformed into a permanent or semi-permanent entity. The Caribbean Development Bank has stressed the importance of Barbados and its other borrowing member states working together, to address the current challenges confronting the region. Acting CDB President Isaac Solomon says this commitment is reflected in the theme for the 54th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors underway in Canada, under the theme Partnerships for Resilient Prosperity. Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ryan Straughn is representing the island at the meeting. Mr. Solomon says the challenges are too complex and large for any single organisation, government or community to solve alone. He says the CDB is driving change throughout the region. Barbadians in the diaspora have been encouraged to do their part to assist their country, and especially people with disabilities. The call from Disabilities Advocate for the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Senator Andwele Boyce. He was speaking during the handover of more than 70 flexible canes to the National Disabilities Unit. The donation was made by Samuel Burke, a visually impaired Barbadian, who lives in the United States of America. He expressed pleasure at being able to assist. Public Relations Officer at the Sanitation Service Authority Carl "Alf" Padmore is back home after being removed from an Air Canada flight at Toronto International Airport on Sunday. He returned home via another airline this morning. In a video which went viral on social media, Mr. Padmore protested against being asked to leave the aircraft. According to him, he was asked to leave the plane after voicing concerns about passengers not being fed after experiencing a flight delay. Mr. Padmore says he is unable to comment on the matter, which is under investigation. He also thanked his mother Marcia Padmore, family, friends and all others who offered praise and support via social media posts, messages, and emails. Kenaz 'Bit Bit' Walker and Jade Leilani Roach will be the first to hit the stage in the semi-finals of the National Cultural Foundation's 2024 Scotiabank Junior Monarch competition. They were among 26 contestants who eagerly drew their positions to perform in the competition's calypso and soca categories at today's media launch. The semi-finalists will face the judges on Sunday, July 7 at the National Botanical Gardens. The show starts at 6:00 p.m. There, the finalists will be chosen and who will take the crowns will be decided two weeks later at the same venue on Saturday, July 20. Managing Director of Scotiabank Barbados Suzette Armoogam-Shah, says the bank is pleased to continue its sponsorship of the competition, which helps young people to reach their full potential and to unlock sustained success. During the event Scotiabank presented a cheque for $80,000 to the NCF. Chief Executive Officer of the NCF Carol Roberts thanked the bank for contributing to the festival's development over the years. Soca artistes, dancers and musicians brought Haggatt Hall, St Michael, to life yesterday evening during the media launch of the Digicel Ceremonial Launch Of The Last Canes at Sky Mall parking lot. During the media launch it was announced that the annual ceremony event will be held on July 6 at the National Botanical Gardens, Waterford, St Michael, and will feature some traditional and modern elements. Tempers flared at Savvy on the Bay yesterday as action by the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) agitated longstanding issues between management at the business and next-door neighbour Copacabana. Businessman Mark Maloney signed a US $90m deal with the Afreximbank which could lead to the start of the construction of the Hyatt Hotel at Lower Bay Street, The City later this year. Maloney expects that once it gets underway, it should be completed in 18 months - two years.
