The head of the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) has pointed to a severe shortage of personnel. Springer Memorial continued its good run in the Dasani/Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools Netball Competitions with their latest victims being Princess Margaret Secondary. Member of Parliament for Christ Church West Central Adrian "Medic" Forde vows to continue walking the avenues of his constituency as Government works towards cleaning up the streets. He was speaking during a walk-through of his constituency following two shootings a month apart that have left some residents uneasy. Given the concern caused by the shootings, the MP says a police outpost will soon be re-established in the area. And MP Forde says Government will remain committed to assisting communities. Barbados has lost some important historical documents after fire struck at the Archives Department late last night. Initial investigations by the Barbados Fire Service point to a lightning strike. The Barbados Fire Service received a call of a structural fire at the Black Rock, St. Michael-based Archives Department close to midnight. Divisional Officer Marlon Small credited quick action by fire officers for the saving of some documents. Archives officials along with Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight were among those at the scene. Minister Abrahams says the Archives Department is important to Barbados. He says a full investigation will be conducted. Chief Archivist Ingrid Thompson say Block D was completely destroyed along with some important records. Captain of the West Indies Women's team, Hayley Matthews says a change of strategy is necessary in the 2nd ODI against Sir-Lanka women. The hosts beat the Windies by six wickets after a middle-order batting collapse saw them being bowled out for a below-par 195 in 47.1 overs. That score was easily chased down. Play in the 2nd ODI starts at 12:30 a.m. Barbados time. Meanwhile, the West Indies Academy is gearing up to face hosts Emerging Ireland in the first of two 4-day matches after losing the ODI series 3-nil. That game starts tomorrow at 6 a.m. Barbados time.

According to Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul, crop thieves are getting bolder. He highlighted the plight of a St. George farmer, who has repeatedly been targetted by the same individual in recent weeks and has been having issues getting assistance from police. Mr. Paul also believes crop thieves should feel the full weight of the law. Approximately 384 people in Barbados die annually, from strokes or cerebrovascular accidents. That is about 13.6% of deaths making Barbados the 119th country in the world with a high number of people dying from those medical issues. These figures have been disclosed by Senior Officer of Health in the Ministry of Health Responsible for NCDs, Dr. Elizabeth Mandeville. She's also revealed the University of the West Indies and the Ministry of Health have embarked on a population-based multi-NCD registry to collect data on strokes, heart attacks, and cancer islandwide. Further, Dr. Mandeville says NCDs must be mainstreamed within both the primary and tertiary healthcare sectors. She was speaking at the Barbados Physical Therapy Association's Stroke Symposium, under the theme a 'Holistic Approach to Managing Strokes'. Dr. Mandeville stresses in order to achieve all of this, a multi-sectoral collaboration is needed to address the underlying socio-economic factors driving NCDs. National ice skater Priyanka Sharma is getting ready to represent Barbados at the upcoming Ice Arena Friendship Cup 2024 in Puebla, Mexico. Sharma, who is based in Canada, has been hard at training as she is set to compete in the senior women's division of the competition set for June 21-23. It will be her opening competition of the new ice skating season. And speaking to CBC Sports, she says she is ready to give of her best. Following this competition, Sharma will then travel to the USA Figure Skating Association's 'Skate Milwaukee' event from July 8-12. Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill has reaffirmed that his Ministry is working hard to bring more airlift to the island. He says while the introduction of the technology may make some jobs redundant, it will also create a need for new skills. Mr. Millington was a guest on The People's Business programme last night. He suggests the creation of a national or regional strategy to guide the development of artificial intelligence.
