An active 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season has come to an end, with Barbados being spared the worst, only being affected by the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1. However, officials at the Barbados Meteorological Services say now is a good opportunity for Barbadians to review and make adjustments to their hurricane preparedness plans, ahead of next year's season. A name has been chosen for the state entity which will be the new home of the island's social services agency. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey made the announcement while addressing the congregation at the Better Life Assembly on the topic of pursuing and achieving social justice. Minister Humphrey stresses that a lot of what the Government is addressing as it relates to social policy and legislative framework requires that social care workers and the average Barbadian practice doing what is right. Residents of St. Andrew held their own Independence Day activities today. Hundreds of them gathered on the Ermy Bourne Highway for the annual carnival activities. The event, after a break during COVID, is now in its third consecutive year and organisers expect it to grow even bigger. One of the founders, Selina King says it's the largest community carnival in Barbados. Meanwhile leader of the band Walk International Sonia Outram explains why she believes the carnival is important to St. Andrew. Former US Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was honoured in a separate ceremony at Parliament following the Independence Day Parade. A portrait of the first black woman elected to the US Congress was unveiled to mark the 100th anniversary of her birth. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says Shirley Chisholm embodies Barbadian leadership on the global stage when women were not seen and black people had just come into their own. United States Congresswoman and former aide to Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Lee describes the stalwart as her mentor. She says it was Ms. Chisholm who encouraged her to join the political landscape, resulting in her being the 20th woman elected to Congress. The Opposition Democratic Labour Party says Barbadians must be proud of the strides made by Barbados since attaining Independence. Leader Ralph Thorne has highlighted the contributions of the late Father of Independence, the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow and the DLP to nationhood. According to him, political independence was a necessary step in facilitating the development of Barbadian society. He says Barbados has evolved in many ways and lives have been transformed as a result of the 'State's steady hand on society's rudder'. Barbadians gathered at Kensington Oval in their numbers to celebrate Barbados' 58th anniversary of Independence and third anniversary as a Republic. The day commenced with the ceremonial Independence Day Parade with 19 armed and unarmed detachments on parade. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in her address stressed Barbadians are a resilient people, confronting the climate crisis and the high cost of living among other issues. She says citizens are also paying a heavy price for the Second Amendment Right of the United States. Ms. Mottley admits 2024 has not been an easy one and has encouraged citizens to stand tall. She wants Barbadians to have respect for self and others.
