Educational institutions and non-profit organisations on island have been encouraged to apply for the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Foundation's inaugural Owen Arthur Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund, valued at US $25,000, will be awarded annually in different destinations. Barbados will be the first recipient of the scholarship, which is in honour of the former Prime Minister of Barbados. Chief Product Development Officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. Marsha Alleyne revealed on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados that applications can be found on the BTMI's webpage. The deadline was recently extended until Monday, June 24. Global Affairs Canada has invested $10 million Canadian dollars into a new climate-resilient agricultural project. The four-year project, spearheaded by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) is set to reduce CARICOM's food import bill by 2025. Countries set to benefit are Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname under the project titled 'Gender Responsive Climate-Smart Agriculture on Food Systems in the Caribbean'. Barbados does not qualify for funding under this project, but FAO's Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, Dr. Renata Clarke says data gathered will benefit the entire region. FAO's Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation Specialist, Roberto Sandoval says the time has come for farmers to shift from traditional farming practices to technologically advanced climate resilient farming. Barbados has been elected to chair one of the highest governing bodies in the World Health Organisation - the WHO's Executive Board. It gives effect to the decisions coming out of the World Health Assembly and also advises on the agenda and priorities for the Annual Health Assembly. The 155th Session of the Executive Board was chaired by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and Other International Organisations in Geneva, Matthew Wilson. Upcoming WHO Executive Board sessions will be chaired by Minister of Health and Wellness, Senator Dr. the Most Honourable Jerome Walcott. Ambassador Wilson notes for Barbados to be chosen to serve as Chair indicates the high regard the member countries have for the island. Mount Gay Rum has paid tribute to one of its late employees, naming a rum in his honour. The seventh addition to the Master Blender Collection, "The Coffee Still Expression: A Tribute to Blues" was launched at the St. Lucy distillery. The limited edition release is named after the late Reynold "Blues" Hinds, who died in 2021 after more than 50 years of service to the company. Managing Director of Mount Gay, Antoine Couvreur, says the rum comes from the first distillation done by Mr. Hinds, using the historic coffee still which was restored under his guidance. Speaking on behalf of the family, grandson Tsean, revealed that Mr. Hinds' legacy continues with his son Wave Rollock, who also works as a distiller with Mount Gay. Guided off-road tours are getting the attention of cricket fans in Barbados for the ICC Men's T-20 World Cup. Managing Director of Off Road Fury Barbados, Christopher Kirton tells the business report bookings are being received from around the world. He says the off-road go-kart experience is on the bucket list of many people. Mr. Kirton says the tours include miles of trails across the Barbados countryside and bookings for summer are also up. The National Peace Programme, which recently passed its one-year mark, continues to reap significant benefits. This is according to Minister of State in the Office of the Attorney General with a focus on Crime Prevention, Corey Lane. He says initiatives implemented by the Peace Programme have been recording high enrolment rates. This includes a seaside aquatics swimming programme in St. Lucy, officially launched this morning. Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw says the Ministry has been working with the Peace Programme to help at risk students in the school system. She says she is particularly supportive of the newly launched swimming initiative which seeks to teach children of primary school age how to swim. Barbadians and other business people from across the CARICOM region are being urged to attend the 3rd AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum. The plea from Acting Chief Operating Officer of Afreximbank, Okechukwu Ihejirika who says there needs to be more buy-in from people in Barbados and the wider region. He was speaking during an interview with CBC News. Mr. Ihejirika, who has been stationed in Barbados over the past ten months, says already they have chartered flights from Cairo, Addis Ababa, and Lagos with over 2,200 people registered to attend the conference which is being held in the Bahamas from June 12 to 14. He says Africans are looking for ways to return home to the Caribbean and invest but that can't happen if there is no one for the business people to interact with. It was a lucky escape for the driver, conductor and passengers on a route taxi after it caught fire last night along Wildey Road, St. Michael. They managed to disembark the vehicle before it was fully engulfed in flames. The Barbados Fire Service was quick to respond to the scene and the fire was eventually extinguished. The ZR was destroyed. Barbados wants the support of the International Labour Organisation as it promotes the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0. It was recently launched by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley for consultation at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda. Bridgetown 3.0 seeks to change rules around representation at international financial institutions and the use of per capita gross national income as a criterion for access. Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan says the ILO must be onboard with the global coalition, if the international community is to be galvanised for human-centred developmental policies. Mr. Jordan was among the speakers for the ongoing 112th International Labour Conference in Geneva. He updated the conference on initiatives and legislation introduced by Barbados to protect workers, noting the island values its people as they contribute their intellectual and physical labour to national development. Former St. Leonard's Girls students are looking forward to celebrating their platinum jubilee. And to mark the occasion they will be hosting a week of activities starting June 8. Treasurer of the 1971 class of St. Leaonard's Girls' School, Lynette Murray says many of them will be returning from USA and Canada for the events. Ms. Murray says this is the first time they will be hosting these events in such a formal way. Activities for the week include a church service, tour of Historic Bridgetown, Catamaran Crusie and a cultural night at Oistins, culminating with a gala dinner, where Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill will be honoured. Additionally, Ms. Murray urges all former St. Leonard's Girls to come out in a show of support. Tourists and locals visiting Oistins Bay Garden will now be able to watch the ICC Men's T20 World Cup matches being played at the famed Kensington Oval. According to Chairman of the Oistins Bay Garden Inc Kemar Harris the first few matches played at the Oval were not shown there due to technical difficulties. However, Harris tells CBC News the issues have been resolved. Barbadians have the option of drinking more water thanks to the public Newport Water Cooler Stations across the island. Their installations fall in line with the Hydrate Barbados Programme which encourages student hydration, and supports the drive for national well-being and the fight against single use plastics. Over the past three years, the 26 sites have gained popularity being used over two million times. Newport's Marketing Executive Janillia August, provided the update as she spoke to the media at the Lester Vaughan School, where the latest cooler station was unveiled in collaboration with the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and the Great Pacific Charitable Trust. Principal Suzette Holder thanked the donors who made the cooler a reality as she notes it will used by all on compound.
