Barbados' first ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup match at Kensington Oval attracted six thousand spectators. And the event held last night has been given a grade of eight out of ten. However, Chairman of the National Organising Committee (NOC) Ambassador Noel Lynch says there are still some kinks to be ironed out headed to the finals. Ambassador Lynch says the systems put in place by Barbados to host the World Cup will be tested tomorrow when the match between England and Scotland takes place. Oistins is one of the areas earmarked as a fan zone for the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup. A group of Barbadian cricketers are set to travel to Dominica with hopes of securing spots on a West Indies Tape-Ball Cricket team to compete at the first World Cup in Dallas next year. During an interview with CBC Sports, Director of Tapeball Cricket of Barbados Elly Holford, said it's a massive opportunity for players from the island to gain exposure. Efforts are being made to screen children for eye problems in their first year of primary and secondary school. This disclosure from General and Pediatric Ophthalmologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Dr. David Callendar. Speaking at the QEH Public Health Talk, Doctor Calendar noted there can be difficulties identifying children below the ages of six to seven with vision problems. This morning, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., launched the third edition of its Junior Chef Cook-Off Competition. The ten participants were revealed at the BTMI's Warrens offices. Apart from being immersed in local culture, the BTMI's Director of Communications and Public Relations, Aprille Thomas says the junior chefs will also receive certificates for training thanks to a new partnership with the Jean and Norma Holder Institute. The Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute's Acting Director, Roderick Prescod, says they're happy to be on board with the BTMI's competition. As the hurricane season gets underway, homeowners are again being reminded to review their home insurance coverage. Donelle Belgrave-Young is the Assistant Manager of Insurance Operations, Underwriting and Institutional Sales at Sagicor. She says not enough people are heeding the warnings to review the sum insured for their property, to ensure it is adequate. Ms. Belgrave-Young says people should review their coverage, especially after renovations or other enhancements to the property. She explains how undervaluation could affect the amount of payout received. Commercial banks in Barbados are being encouraged to reduce the time it takes for people to conduct their business. The call has come from Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Investment, Senator Chad Blackman. He says that doing so, will help Barbados' standing in the ease of doing business index. Senator Blackman was a guest on CBC TV8's current affairs programme, The People's Business, last night which focussed on resilience, growth and opportunities. He's pointed to the economic potential of locally grown products like aloe vera which he believes can be mass-produced and exported for use in a wide range of beauty products. Regional grouping, CARICOM and the Caribbean Public Health Organisation are reaching out to the youth in Barbados and the Caribbean as part of a campaign warning of the ill effects of tobacco. Head of Chronic Disease and Injury at CARPHA, Dr. Heather Armstrong called attention to the age of introduction and the impact tobacco use will have on the user in the future. She was among the panel for a webinar on World No Tobacco Day observed Friday. It was held under the theme, 'Youth Step In and Speak Out'. Although the island is returning to a state of normalcy following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems some parents are still hesitant to send their children to nursery schools. Principal of Thelma Berry Nursery in St. David's Christ Church, Katie Riley, disclosed enrollment numbers for the upcoming school year are still down compared to the pre-pandemic period. Ms. Riley adds there are numerous benefits to exposing children to nursery education. Despite the island being under Flood Watch for most of the day,  all systems were go for Barbados' first ICC men's T20 Cricket World Cup match at Kensington Oval. According to the Chairman of the National Organising Committee (NOC) Ambassador Noel Lynch, today's showers will not put a damper on the match which was scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. The Flood Watch was discontinued this afternoon. Ambassador Lynch has also noted the spotlight will be on the country's state of readiness to host the finals of the World Cup.
