Members of the Rockfield community and students of the Ignatius Byer Primary School can now get lost in the magical world of books at a new mini library. This mini library is the eighth instalment of its kind after the community centre was closed for repairs for seven years. Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith is hopeful there will be 20 more set up across the island but urges members of the community to donate books to the library. He was speaking during the 'Barbados is Blooming' launch, a literacy project of the Prince Godwill D. Fomusoh Foundation Inc.n and the Massy Foundation at the Rockfield Community Centre, St. Lucy. Minister Griffith says he was also looking forward to seeing mini reading clubs and study halls created and expanded to all other locations. Member of Parliament for St. Lucy Peter Phillips describes the project as wholesome and timely and urges students to make good use of the library. There's more reaction to yesterday's court decision regarding the Democratic Labour Party. That ruling by the High Court has ordered that the status quo remain until June 26th. This means Pedro Shepherd will continue to function as General Secretary and Andre Worrell as President. Political analyst Peter Wickham has weighed in on the matter. He says the Court's decision is helpful in giving a clear understanding of the interim leadership of the Party, while allowing it to resolve its issues. Hundreds of Barbadians today benefited from free meals as Barbados for the first time observed World Hunger Day. Teams from the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness ventured out into various communities across the island serving cooked dishes. One of the first stops was the Golden Rock Community Centre in The Pine. Community Relations Assistant with the alliance, Sashana Austin, says the locations were chosen after discussions with Government officials.

Police have ensured some of the illicit firearms they have removed from the streets, will never be used again. Close to a hundred of such weapons earmarked for destruction this morning, were displayed at the Central Police Station. They included rifles, glocks and other types of pistols of all shapes and sizes that had been confiscated by lawmen. One hundred and thirteen obsolete or condemned firearms of various calibres were also brought by officers from the Barbados Defense Force to be crushed. Sargeant Liesl Gabriel of the Barbados Police Service says a specialist from the United Nations was on hand to witness the exercise. Government is committed to amplifying the excellence of youth in Barbados by spearheading programmes to reward their positive efforts. This is from Minister of Youth Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith. He spoke during the National Youth Awards ceremony at the Frank Collymore Hall where 119 young people in various categories were rewarded for their works of excellence. There the youth showcased their skills in singing, musical skills and spoken words. In addition to the celebration of excellence, there were also a number of special acknowledgement awards. Among the especially mentioned awardees for her resilience and courage was bilateral amputee Rashonte Parsons. Minister Griffith says far too often people like to stay on the sidelines and criticise and not get involved in highlighting the contributions of youth many of whom are crying out for our support. International author and professional motivational speaker Kristen Greaves encouraged the young awardees to dare to dream bigger, get better and strive to go further in life. The President of the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness, Kemar Saffrey, is calling for the creation of a social network agency which will be fully online. He says this database or platform will allow key agencies and stakeholders involved in interventions for the homeless and displaced to readily access pertinent information. Mr. Saffrey was speaking during a Bridgetown Consultation on Homelessness, under the theme 'Bigger Better Inter-Agency on Homelessness', at the Radisson Aquatica. Mr. Saffrey tells stakeholders in some instances it is difficult to gain access to some offices when information is critical to making a decision. He says he built a similar platform about six years ago, but it was never used. He adds he supports the database in the form of an app as computers and WhatsApp are readily acceptable for business transactions today. However, he made it clear medical information is not needed, but rather services rendered to an individual, and notes the platform can be wider.
