Some 23 Cadet Companies across the island now have a new group of Cadets in their companies as the 2023 intake held their Passing Out Parade yesterday. The recruits are drawn from 22 secondary schools and one independent company. Speaking on the sidelines, Commander David Dowridge, Commandant of the Barbados Cadet Corp, noted the success of the recruitment. The Commandant says the youngsters performed well at the parade and CBC spoke with some of them who were in winners row. Combermere's 12-year-old Chelsea Watts says it wasn't easy but she stayed the course. A special service was held by the local organizing committee of the ICC Men's T20 tournament to show appreciation to all who contributed to the preparation leading up to the World Cup. Among those in attendance at the St. Leonard's Church were Cricket Legend Wes Hall and current West Indies Women's Captain Hayley Matthews. Speaking after the service, local organizing committee event manager Wendell Coppin thanked everyone who was involved and emphasized how big this event is for the country. In her sermon, Reverend Canon Dr. Sonia Hinds stated the game of cricket has a lot of similarities to the Christian religion. Superb Blend Gladiola has successfully defended their BCA T20 Cup title. Playing in the final at the KMV Oval, Gladiola defeated Wildey by five wickets. Zachary McCaskie struck an unbeaten 90 as Wildey posted 171 for five. Meanwhile, Ashley Nurse took two for 26. Providing opportunities for young people to acquire skills is one of the methods through which the national peace programme is pursuing its objectives. The suggestion from the Minister of State in the Office of the Attorney General with responsibility for Crime Prevention, Corey Lane, who says participants in the programme learn to be productive citizens who contribute to the economy. Two of the programmes that are running at the moment are bartending and barbering classes, with 24 students enrolled for six weeks. Speaking today while visiting the programmes, Minister Lane said while the main aim is to help and show that there are positive alternatives for at-risk youth, the reality is that having skills can also put them on a career path. Meanwhile, Director of East to West Enterprises, Timothy McClean, who is also the Project Manager for the Elevate the Peace Programme, announced that jobs will be available for some of the participants who complete the courses. The St. Leonard's Anglican Church held a special service for the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the ICC Men's Twenty20 World Cup. Reverend Canon Dr Sonia Hinds, Rector of St. Leonard's Anglican Church, stressed that success in cricket required many of the qualities needed for a good life. Meanwhile, Cricket Operations and Development Manager at the Barbados Cricket Association, Wendell Coppin, who is also the Event Manager of the LOC, expressed gratitude to the church for recognising their work. Barbados’ newest centenarian Veronique McCollin, affectionately known as “Minnie,” attributes her longevity to reading her Bible and praying regularly. McCollin, a mother of five, moved to Barbados from Dominica at 18 and worked as a housekeeper throughout her life. Former educator Marsha Jordan praised McCollin’s dedication to her family. “Talk about a housekeeper! This woman kept our house in a high state of quality, it wasn’t just the cleaning and organising, it was her presence and the enrichment we got from her. She is someone we could depend on,” she said. McCollin worked for the Jordan family from 1972 to 2007. An accident between the Greame Hall and Top Rock Roundabouts in Christ Church has left some people nursing injuries. While the extent of those injuries is unknown at this time, the Barbados Police Service are on the scene. Young Barbadians are being reminded of the importance of celebrating national festivals. The advice has come from Dr. David Yawson, a Ghanaian-born Lecturer at the University of the West Indies. He was addressing children who attended the National Library Service's Africa Day celebrations at the Library's Fairchild Street branch. During his presentation, Dr. Yawson shared some of the differences and similarities of Ghana's Fetu Festival, with Crop Over. Director of the Library Service, Jennifer Yarde, says celebrations of the country's African heritage will continue into the Crop Over Festival.
