Barbados and the region stand to benefit from a new programme. It's the historic United Nations Global Compact Sustainable Supplier and SME Programme, which was officially launched at the ongoing Global Supply Chain Forum. The purpose of the programme is to bridge crucial gaps to accelerate sustainability in global supply chains and future-proof small and medium sized enterprises for the green transition. UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Didier Trebucq says the programme is tailor made for the Caribbean and will add value to the region's business model. Questions have been raised about how Barbados will be impacted by efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organisation has set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. The considerations include the possibility of introducing a universal price for emissions and whether there should be a phased-in approach for ships to switch to green energy. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, Professor Troy Lorde, says the move could have implications for shipping costs and even the country's cruise sector. With plans to introduce a ferry service between Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, Professor Lorde says decarbonisation could also impact this venture.
