Barbados is now the new global hub for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Gerd Muller and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds have signed an agreement at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre just ahead of the 4th International UN SIDS Conference in Antigua. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley notes the signing signals an important development for the country as the capacity to diversify economies is critical. She adds this partnership will allow for the building out of new industries within the domestic markets, as well as work with outside investors to extend to the entire Latin America and Caribbean. Already UNIDO has named one of its officers, Stein Hansen, to lead the office in Barbados. He was previously posted here as the second in charge at the United Nations Development Programme about 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Director General Muller says an agreement has been reached on some important sectors, not only for Barbados but for all SIDS. The Ministry of the Environment is worried about the increasing number of applications to cut down mahogany trees. To address the situation it will soon be using a device called a resistograph to determine if removing them is the best option. Manager of the National Botanical Gardens and Dendrologist Nigel Jones, made the comments at one of three wood lots in Kendal Woods, St. John. Mr. Jones says he's set to demit office soon, and calls on those interested in dendrology to take up the opportunity to study the art. He says it's regrettable there's a Dendrological Scholarship sitting in the Ministry of Education, but no one seems to be interested in the field. The Anglican Church of Barbados is making it clear it has not eliminated the sacrament of confirmation. Bishop the Right Reverend Michael Maxwell sought to clear up the misconception during a service to mark the start of Synod 2024. This follows a significant move last December, to allow all baptised Christians including children, to participate in the sacrament of communion. Previously, only people who had been confirmed were allowed to take communion. However, Bishop Maxwell says those baptised as adults will not require the sacrament of confirmation. The possibility was raised by Suriname's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, Albert Ramdin. He was a guest on CBC TV8's Current Affairs Programme The People's Business last evening. The focus was on providing an update on the Suriname/Barbados Agreement, signed two years ago.
