The Barbados Men's Rugby team will face neighbouring St. Vincent and the Grenadines today in an International Rugby Sevens Test match at the Garrison Savannah. Set for a 7:00 p.m. kick off time, it will be preceeded by a Bajan Pride Women's Sevens exhibition match at 5:15 p.m. CBC Sports visited the Savannah as the local boys went through their final paces. Government is stepping up efforts to ensure all Barbadians participate in the Season of Emancipation. It will be establishing an Emancipation Village in Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, beginning in the grassy area just a stone's throw away from the Bussa Statue. The announcement was made by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight during a press conference at Sky Mall. The Village, which will be launched on May 25 and runs to August 17, will be free to the public. It's the brainchild of Special Envoy in the Prime Minister's Office on Reparations and Economic Enfranchisement, Trevor Prescod. He believes it will give artistes an opportunity to experiment with different fusions of Caribbean music. The Barbados Police Service is looking for hundreds of good men and women to bolster its ranks. With that in mind, it has been ramping up its Community Recruitment Drives. The latest one came off today in Church Village Green in Bridgetown, where the service mounted displays with its various units. Officer in Charge of the Human Resources Department, Superintendent Winston Holder, shed some light on the total number of vacancies in the service. He notes there has been a positive response to its recruitment drive series executed throughout the week. The latest development in the leadership struggle in the Opposition Democratic Labour Party is not surprising. That assessment comes from veteran Political Scientist Dr. George Belle. In an interview with CBC News, Dr. Belle explains the leadership issue will continue until one of the leaders of the two factions resigns. He believes given the Opposition Leader's legitimate position as Political Leader, only one path forward exists. In a document reportedly sent to Party members and circulating online, embattled General Secretary of the DLP Steve Blackett, says he's considering his position and membership of the Party. Deputy Prime Minister, Santia Bradshaw has condemned adults who take advantage of minors and has also condemned those who resort to sharing pornography that at times goes viral on social media. She says society has a right to denounce such activities as she condemned circulation of a video involving a minor. Ms. Bradshaw's comments came as Debate resumed in the Lower House on a Resolution on the Report of the Joint Select Committee on the Social Sector and the Environment on the Child Protection Bill. Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Ryan Straughn has made a case for the protection of children who are non-verbal, from child abuse. He says one reported case of child abuse is too much, and as adults they have a responsibility to get it right. Mr. Straughn was contributing to Debate today in the Lower House, on a Resolution on the Report of the Joint Select Committee on the Social Sector and the Environment on the Child Protection Bill. There have been new developments within the opposition Democratic Labour Party camp. The latest is the reported suspension of Dr. Ronnie Yearwood as president of the party. Acting General Secretary Pedro Shepherd has confirmed the decision to the media. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute, CANARI says small island development states need special attention given their vulnerabilities. The statement comes as Barbados and other small island states gear up for the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda. Programme Director, Anna Cadiz-Hadeed says the needs of these small islands are different as they stretch from the Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and the Pacific. While acknowledging the strides made after the first SIDS Conference in Barbados, she says these countries are not where they should be. Ms. Cadiz-Hadeed was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. The interconnectedness of the economy and nursing may not be obvious initially but economic power is critical to the delivery of health care. Dr. Christine Greenidge the Chief Operations Officer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital who delivered the feature address at the Nurses Seminar for Nurses' Week, says the sustainability of the island's healthcare systems depends on money. Dr. Greenidge told the nurses gathered that in looking at the system they should be able to identify unnecessary expenditures to save costs in some areas so that there is money to go around. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has endorsed charity work being done to uplift youth in the Bush Hall area. She was speaking as the Building the Future Charity presented cheques to two young outstanding athletes from the neighbourhood. Liam Howard-Niles, the Under-9 Victor Ludorum for 2023 NAPSAC and Under-13 Rajada Hinds, this year's Victrix Ludorum for BSSAC have attracted the eye of the charity and given necessary funding to attend an upcoming meet. Despite receiving dental surgery earlier, Ms. Mottley said she felt it was important to celebrate their success.
