Barbados has been encouraged to join the case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In December 2023, South Africa filed an application initiating judicial proceedings against Israel for violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention. The application sought provisional measures to safeguard Palestinian rights under the Convention and ensure Israel's compliance therewith. Secretary of the Caribbean Against Apartheid in Palestine, Lalu Hanuman says it's important Barbados give support to the Palestinian struggle. He was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. With Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica now recognising the state of Palestine, all independent members of CARICOM now do so. Treasurer of the organisation, Sulieman Bulbulia welcomes the move, noting it's an act of solidarity with the Palestinians despite their homeland being under occupation. He says Barbadians need to be sensitised about what's going on as many don't understand the full nature of the conflict. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey is standing by the introduction of the Child Protection Bill, 2023. The Barbados Employers' Confederation (BEC) is urgently calling for a review and changes to the Minimum Wage Act, and the Minimum Wage Order. Executive Director Sheena Mayers-Granville says any increase in the minimum wage must be based on cost of living and the level of productivity in the workforce. She made the comments during a press conference to announce the BEC's week of activities. Ms. Mayers-Granville says they are aware the Ministry of Labour is responsible for enforcing labour laws, while the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) has an expanded mandate for adjudicating cases. However, the BEC remains concerned about the resources available to both entities. Additional changes the BEC would like to see include the ERT being able to reduce awards where employees contribute to their own termination, a minimum threshold for consultation prior to redundancy, and a comprehensive labour code for Barbados. A full investigation has been ordered after a fire truck was destroyed in a cane trash fire at Locust Hall, St. George. Our Cameraman Christopher Wood was on the scene soon after the incident. A new entity has been launched to help entrepreneurs promote their businesses. The Unified Trust Co-operative Society Limited showcased some of their products at the National Botanical Gardens over the weekend. The Co-operative has ten members so far and is actively looking to add to its ranks. President Marvelle Lynch says the whole point of the cooperative is to promote the use of Barbadian products. Employers across Barbados have been challenged to host an activity highlighting the importance of health and safety in the workplace. Executive Director of the Barbados Employers' Confederation (BEC), Sheena Mayers-Granville says this is one of the topics to be included during their week of activities. Other activities include the annual general meeting, a luncheon and panel discussion and a fireside chat. Additionally, BEC's President Gail-Ann King is calling for a mandatory national standard of time, which will need to be measured in weeks rather than days and discussed at the tripartite level.
