Several Members of Parliament have been in their communities, encouraging students as they prepare to sit the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination. Member of Parliament for Christ Church East, Wilfred Abrahams, visited the children of St Christopher and St Bartholomew Primary Schools ahead of tomorrow's common Entrance Exam. The students at St. Christopher Primary welcomed the MP and spent some time with him in the school's Hall. Mr. Abrahams told them it is natural to be nervous and reminded them this is the first exam of many.  Meanwhile, at St Bartholomew's primary, the minister urged the students amid their nervousness to do their best. 32 class four students at Shirley Chisholm Primary School were advised to give of their best in tomorrow's examination. Member of Parliament for Christ Church West Central Adrian Ford gave words of encouragement to the students who will be joining hundreds of their counterparts to sit the annual examination. He also presented them with pencils, rubbers, sharpeners and other tools to be utilised during the examination.   Meanwhile Minister in the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Sandra Husbands, presented examination kits to Class 4 students of the West Terrace Primary School

The Barbados Postal Service is hosting a free workshop to help local entrepreneurs maximise their online presence Seventy-eight entrepreneurs have subscribed to participate in the event themed “Finding the Missing Links: Enhancing Your Digital Strategy with Artificial Intelligence”. The two-day event which kicks off tomorrow, is being facilitated by Google expert and digital coach, Vicente Pimienta whose trip is facilitated by the United States Postal Service. The Home Affairs Minister, Wilfred Abrahams, says it will encourage business people to expand their thought processes to see the world as their marketplace. Meanwhile, Mr. Pimienta says the information he is sharing with the participants will help them to accelerate their businesses. That event is being held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Barbadians will be able to have parcels and packages ordered online from anywhere delivered right to their doors within the next eighteen months. A major disaster was averted in the City of Bridgetown as firemen valiantly fought a late-night fire. At least two Government officials are tonight appealing to property owners to come forward and offer their houses as solutions in times of crisis. The appeal follows a late-night blaze on Sunday which has left 45 people, including ten children, displaced. Rachelle Agard has this report. Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ryan Straughn says it is time for Barbadians living in the diaspora to find ways to give back to the country. The Minister was speaking during a StreetMic session at the Barbados High Commission, in Tottenham Court Road, London, over the weekend. Also present at the event were the Barbados High Commission to London, his Excellency Milton Inniss, Special Envoy for Investment in the UK and Diaspora Business, Tony Sealy, and Barbados Revenue Authority Revenue Commissioner, Mrs. Louisa Lewis-Ward. Minister Straughn adds it was imperative that Barbados seeks to achieve as high a return on investments similar to the UK and the USA. He says to do this, the Government of Barbados has embarked on a comprehensive reform programme, including making business seamless for Barbadians in and out of the island. The planned amalgamation of this country's social service agencies should be completed by year-end. The update from the Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey. The Government is planning to import pork to ensure it can meet the increased demand anticipated for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture and Nutritional Security, Indar Weir, during a BLP St. Philip West branch meeting last evening. Mr Weir says the decision was taken after meeting with local pig farmers. Stressing the focus will remain on ramping up local pork production, Minister Weir says the authorities will be revisiting the duties on imported pork, which in some cases are significantly below the maximum tariff of 185 per cent. Twenty-five people are now contemplating their next move following a late-night fire in the City.  Acting Fire Chief, Henderson Patrick tells CBC News, that officers received reports of a fire in Wellington Street at 10:23 p.m.  After the smoke had cleared, six structures were left destroyed, and 10 others damaged, leaving 15 adults and 10 children displaced.  Mr Patrick says an investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.  Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for the City, Corey Lane, who described the situation as a disaster, has commended residents in the community for their swift response.  City resident Ted Joseph, whose house at the adjoining Cypress Street has been partially damaged, says he had just finished taking a shower when the neighbours raised the alarm. The Barbados Police Service released the following statement on the incident: "The Barbados Police Service (TBPS) is carrying out investigations into the circumstances surrounding a house fire that occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Sunday 5th May 2024, at Wellington Street, Saint. Michael, which damaged six (6) houses. Two (2) houses were extensively damaged, while there was moderate damage to four (4) additional houses. "Three (3) fire tenders were present under the command of Fire Chief (ag) Henderson Patricks, Deputy Fire Chief Edwards, Divisional Officer Vaughan, and Station Officer Payne. Lead Fire Officer Alleyne and Greaves and sixteen (16) other fire officers responded and extinguished the blaze." It is coming from the managing director of B's Recycling, Paul Bynoe, in the aftermath of a fire which swept through the Cane Garden, St. Thomas complex on Saturday. The 39th edition of Exercise TradeWinds kicked off in Barbados on Saturday morning with more than 1200 troops from 36 different nations taking part. The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) and the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) hosted this year's annual military exercise with the goal being to ensure security for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Minister of Housing Dwight Sutherland says the Government is taking its first steps this month to make sure conveying land in Barbados becomes easier. Speaking at the launch of phase two of the Harmony Estates, Mr. Sutherland said Government will hold a meeting with key stakeholders to chart a path that makes things seamless for Barbadians to own land. Mr. Sutherland also says that the Government plans to build 4000 houses in 2 years and making the process easier is an asset. He has promised that in three months they will have a solution to the long process in acquiring land.
