The National Task Force on Literacy Education has been hard at work since its launch in March. Moved by startling findings on analysis of existing data, Chair Dr. Sylvia Henry says the Task Force on Literacy Education will be approaching some schools to discuss various interventions and mediation strategies. She says partnerships have been forged with various entities, including educational institutions and Government agencies to develop and implement initiatives that would further advance its mandate. In an era of artificial intelligence, the trade union movement is also grappling with what it says is a new type of worker emerging. This was disclosed during a panel discussion on evolving or endangered, the role of trade unions in a modern workforce put on by the National Union of Public Workers at its Dalkeith Headquarters, St. Michael. The panel was made up of Michelle Russell an attorney-at-law who specialises in employment law, Deputy General Secretary of the NUPW Wayne Walrond and Julian Hunte a trade unionist and former Deputy General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union. Mr. Walrond says it's an issue they have to train workers to navigate. Moderator Taahir Bulbulia posed a question to panelist Michelle Russell, an attorney-at-law about the importance of the trade union in the modern workforce. The lives of 39-year-old Tammi Tonas Tammetha Bryant of Vaucluse Tenantry, St. Thomas and 37-year-old Akeem Ricardo Hunte of St. Judes, St. George, were cut short in a horrific crash early this morning. The accident, involving a single vehicle with four occupants occurred around 3:30 a.m. along Highway 7 on Hastings Main Road in Christ Church. Barbados has so far recorded eight road fatalities for the year. The latest victims bring the number to five in as many days. Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene while Hunte succumbed to his injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Reports are the vehicle was travelling towards Bridgetown when on reaching a point in the road, it struck a wall next to the SoCo Hotel and careened into a utility pole. The driver and another passenger were also transported to hospital for medical treatment. Police Inspector Rodney Inniss is encouraging the public to be vigilant on the roads. A regional marketing agent is calling for Caribbean islands to have more cross-cultural exchanges. Jacqueline Louis, from the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau, says she is exploring how to create a lasting relationship with Barbados and share its tourism product. She says following talks with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, she now has a sense of hope in promoting her country's tourism product. Ms. Louis who is also Chief Executive Officer of Embrace Group, was speaking on the sidelines of Barbados' Reggae in the Gardens show at the National Botanical Gardens over the weekend. Ms. Louis says the show gave her team an opportunity to partner with promoters Ryan Brathwaite and Antonio Moore to highlight some of what her country has to offer. Ms. Louis adds she has already started discussions with Winair and InterCaribbean on packages to St. Maarten similar to Caribbean Airlines. A fifteen member team, made up of ten males and five females, will represent Barbados at the 2024 Caribbean Darts Championships in Jamaica in July. CBC Sports caught up with the national team during a practice session recently at the National Stadium, where they were fine-tuning their techniques ahead of the meet. Coach Gregory Catlyn says that despite a few work committements hampering practice sessions, the team is still in a good position to be successful. With a number of youngsters on the national team, President Wendy Barrow is hoping that more younger players will gain an interest, as the 2024 local season gets going next month. Organisers of this year's Barbados National Senior Games say all systems are go for the 20th edition of the event, set for May 5 to 20. Ahead of the Games, set to begin on Sunday, Co-ordinator of the Organising Committee Mac Fingall provided an update, stating that there will be greater professionalism and money incentives for primary and secondary schools competing. Member of the Organising Committee, Harcourt Wason, says the finals of the track and field events will take place on May 19 and 20 at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex while May 18 will be a seperate day for only field competitions. Wason revealed some of the big name competitors already listed to attend. An open field in Sweet Vale is getting a facelift and it will soon become a recreational site in the St. George North constituency. The initiative is being led by Parliamentary Representative, Toni Moore. Last Friday, she along with other officials and students from schools in St. George and the nearby Grantley Adams Memorial, planted trees on the outskirts of the ground. Ms. Moore also took time to share the rationale for the project. Students also received trees to take back to their school and Ms. Moore reminded them of the importance of growing food. Two more people have lost their lives on our roads, with Barbados recording five road fatalities in under a week. Police from the Hastings/Worthing Station are presently carrying out investigations into a fatal collision, resulting in the deaths of a man and a woman. It occurred about 3:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 1, 2024, along Highway 7, Hastings Main Road, in the area of the Soco Hotel. The collision involved one motor vehicle, with four occupants. The motor car was travelling along the mentioned road from the area of the Lanterns Mall towards the area of Bridgetown when on reaching a point in the road, the driver of the vehicle struck a wall of the Soco Hotel and then struck a utility pole. A female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical doctor, while a male passenger was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are appealing to motorists travelling along Highway 7 to divert at Hart’s Gap if travelling in a southern direction and at Dayrells Road in the area of Bubba’s Sports Bar if travelling towards the City, as officers continue to carry out their investigations.
