In spite of the many industrial and working debates over the last year, the Barbados Workers Union's membership continues to grow. General Secretary Toni Moore says the BWU has been able to consolidate in some divisons, and has seen new ones join the rank and file over the last year. But she is calling for more divisions to become fully unionised. Ms. Moore was speaking during a walk through of the National Botanical Gardens for the BWU's May Day celebrations. She says this year's May Day event promises to be bigger and better than last year's, with more attractions and incentives and a jam session hosted by the National Cultural Foundation. Additionally, Communications and Information Manager, Cheyne Jones says the Union's 'Bring a New Colleague' programme has been reaping dividends as more young members have been signing up. Former CBC employee passes away CBC mourns the passing of one of our Newsnight team members. Philip Hinds is known to us here at CBC as Perker passed away suddenly on Wednesday. Philip, who joined the CBC on November 12, 1979, was an outstanding sound engineer. He worked on the news almost every night, along with most of CBC's radio and TV productions over the years. Former Manager of Radio Win Callender worked closely with Philip and remembers him as a gentle giant who was loved by the staff. Philip retired on December 13, 2013, but his skills were soon sought after by CBC and he returned on a freelance basis. Maurice Bailey heads engineering, the department to which Philip was attached. Philip "Perker" Hinds would have been 72 tomorrow had he been alive. We at CBC remember him by one of his favourite sayings "ya en nun." rest easy Perker and sincerest condolences to his wife Sylvia, children Kimberly and Kirk and the extended family. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says the governance structure of CWI must be addressed if the sport is to develop in the region. This is necessary as she says there's too much blurring across the current structure, too much conflict and room for its continuation. Ms. Mottley was among regional leaders addressing the opening of the CARICOM Regional Cricket Conference "Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket" being held in Trinidad and Tobago. Meanwhile President of Cricket West Indies Dr. Kishore Shallow has identified some of the issues hindering the implementation of the recommendations from the Wehby Governance Report. Recently three boards rejected some of the recommendations tabled at the latest CWI annual general meeting. In the report submitted by Senator Don Wehby in July 2020, recommendations were made to downsize the Board of Directors from 18 to 12, a reduction of the Board Committees from 12 to five and a redefining of the roles of President and Vice President. Several territorial Boards objected. Dr. Shallow, when pressed about the challenges, didn't hold back. To squash any beef between them, farmer Andrew Dickson delivered a cow to Shawn Holder after several chaotic days during which the true ownership of the heifer was on the table. Although fellow farmer Holder is convinced the animal is his, Dickson maintains he only “returned” it to keep the peace. Last week Monday, Dickson made a post on social media and asked the public to help him find his black angus brangus and red poll-mixed cow which was stolen. After Dickson offered a reward, his investigations led him to Joe’s River Forest, St Joseph and to a cow there. (Video by Jameel Springer)
