It was on Monday that he posted a video on social media asking for assistance to find his missing Angus, Brangus and Red Poll mixed animal. Young Barbadian men are being encouraged to challenge themselves to set personal goals and never stop learning. That message from Assistant Director, Rehabilitation and Therapy, National Crime Prevention and Reduction Unit, Nicollette Williams, to graduands of phase one of the 2024 Mr. Executive Interschool Business and Gentleman's Challenge She told them that committing to developmental and educational programmes is the gateway to becoming well-rounded citizens. The challenge was created in 2017 by Winston Cumberbatch, former fifth and sixth-year head at St. Leonard's Boys' School Barbados and is now being coordinated by Educreations Caribbean which he founded after retiring from the teaching service. The primary objectives of the challenge are to cultivate positive business ethics and entrepreneurial skills within boys, equip them for the world of work, and help them to become gentlemen in their attitudes, deportment, and relationships with women. As part of the contest, the students from eleven secondary schools participated in a $20 Challenge. During his remarks, Mr. Cumberbatch appealed to the media to assist with promoting the initiative which is helping guide young Barbadian men in the right direction. Despite the breakthrough deal on the Loss and Damage Fund at COP28 in Dubai, a Government Minister says the real work begins with its implementation. Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins says Barbados was supportive of the move with Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley working with other countries to bring them to the table. She was among the panel for a Ministerial Roundtable at the 14th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. As Barbados moves ahead with its energy transition, Senator Cummins provided insight into fossil fuel imports by the island over the years. A regional Rastafari organisation is lobbying for Caribbean governments to recognise and admit the wrongs committed against the Rastafari population. It's the Caribbean Rastafari Organisation Incorporated. Member Steve Reid put forward the plights of the Rastafari Community as he participated in the third session Permanent Forum on people of African descent in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Reid says the pursuit of reparatory justice remains a top priority. The organisation also wants Caribbean governments and the CARICOM Reparations Commission to settle on the repatriation point in their ten point plan. Barbadians are opting to file their taxes early this tax filing season. This is a welcomed move for the Barbados Revenue Authority. The BRA is also reporting citizens are taking advantage of the various tax clinics put on by the Revenue Authority to assist. Senior Manager of Tax Operations, Fay Greenidge says they want persons to be comfortable in filing their returns. Ms. Greenidge was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. While the current tax clinics by the Barbados Revenue Authority cater to individuals, Manager of Tax Operations at the BRA, Linda Best says there's a special set-up for businesses. Barbados used a high-level meeting to press for a new international special tribunal to seek reparations for transatlantic slavery and its legacies. Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong says no international court is properly equipped and such a special tribunal is required. He was at the time addressing the third forum of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent at the United Nations. He says it will adjudicate reparations claims. Ambassador Comissiong has made it clear the global reparations movement is here to stay. He adds reparations for Caribbean countries is not solely about a money payment. As Barbados looks to Latin America to boost tourism earnings, there's hope for increased airlift from one of its airline partners. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Incorporated Andrea Franklin says it's one of the island's fastest growing markets, recording 78% growth in 2023 over the 2022 numbers. She says the BTMI is working to explore the potential of that region, with a deeper partnership with Copa Airlines as one of the desired outcomes. Ms. Franklin, along with the BTMI's Chair Shelly Williams and Director of Latin America Corey Garrett are in São Paulo, Brazil participating in the 2024 World Travel Market Latin America. The event, which got underway Tuesday and ends today, serves as a platform for global travel leaders to converge and discuss potential collaborations and innovations in the tourism industry. Barbados is also on show at the event, with its booth promoting Barbadiana, as well as major and niche events in entertainment, leisure and sports. The Psychiatric Hospital is on a mission to remove the stigma associated with mental health. To do this, Nursing Officer Ryan Lewis, is championing a national campaign titled "Check My Bias". The programme was launched on March 11 to allow people to check their beliefs and myths surrounding mental health issues. Mr. Lewis says since the soft launch of the project via social media, they have visited polyclinics and other health institutions to educate the public. He says so far, public interest is there, but more effort will be made to break the stigma against mental health. CARICOM has developed a policy framework for the sustainable management of the region's environmental and natural resources. This is as it moves to tackle global challenges that could impact the bloc's sustainable development. Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett says the Caribbean Community Environment and Natural Resources Policy Framework, is expected to be formally launched at the upcoming fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda. She made the announcement during a sub-regional workshop in Guyana. Dr. Barnett told those gathered that CARICOM is determined to lead by example. Minister of Natural Resources in Guyana, Vickram Bharrat says Guyana can be used as a model country for the balancing of the extraction of natural resources with the preservation of biodiversity. The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) wants adequate resources provided for the island's teachers along with improved wages. President Rudy Lovell made the call during the union's annual general conference opening ceremony. While the BUT supports moves to establish a teaching service commission, Mr. Lovell has highlighted a number of concerns it wants addressed, including appointments. He reiterated a call for the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training to implement a national policy for security at all schools on island. Barbados is where women leaders are born, moulded and established. But more needs to be done to create additional spaces for women and girls. The point has been reiterated by Founder and Chairman of the Deaf Heart Project, Che Greenidge. Ms. Greenidge was the guest speaker at the Soroptimist International Barbados' 61st annual general meeting at the Accra Beach Hotel, Christ Church. Ms. Greenidge says it's important measures are put in place to make spaces safe and inclusive, where all women and girls can connect and support each other. Further, Ms. Greenidge notes skills training and education are also important. Additionally, Katrina Bowen was awarded the 'Frances Chandler Memorial Award' for 2024 while Kristin Spencer is this year's 'UWI Soroptimist International Scholar'.
