A number of teachers at the Lester Vaughan School have requested transfers to other institutions. This was revealed by President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Rudy Lovell, following a meeting with teachers. The school has been plagued with environmental issues for a number of years, which forced a shift to online classes last term. In an update yesterday, the Ministry of Education reported that in-person classes for fourth and fifth form students who are using the easter break to complete SBAs and prepare for external exams got off to a smooth start with no reports of illness. The Ministry gave the green light for face-to-face instruction to resume, after meeting with parents last week. A report presented during the meeting revealed there were no emissions at the plant, and all volatile organic compound levels were below the threshold for safety. The Caribbean Development Bank is calling creatives to action with the launch of the second phase of its Cultural and Creative Industries Innovation Fund Programme. But, according to the CDB's Acting Head of Private Sector Divison, Lisa Harding there will be numerous changes to this phase. She says the decision comes after an independent evaluation in December 2022, to determine the fund's relevance and progress made. The fund was established in 2017, with an initial US $2.6 million from the CBD, in support of the development of the creative industries including fashion and contemporary design, visual arts, audiovisual, festivals and carnivals, and music - across the region. Miss Harding says there will be greater inclusion of governmental support in project designs as the public sector needs to be included. There will also be more project implementation support for applicants and those awarded grants, online application systems, data analysis, and artificial intelligence for routine administrative processes. A cybersecurity expert is urging Barbadians to be more alert to the advances in technology as they go about their daily lives. Amidst complaints over social media that chip and PIN cards were being swiped from at least a two-foot distance away from card machines. Managing Director of CARISEC Global Inc. Edward Millington, says it is best to create a culture of security and use radio frequency identification or RFID sleeves or wallets, in an effort to protect users. However, Vice President of the Barbados Bankers Association, Shimon McIntosh says the chip and PIN technology is the most effective against skimming as card data is encrypted. Mr. McIntosh added that while a chip cannot be cloned using a reader as each tap carries a unique signature, an RFID wallet can assist with avoiding accidental taps.
