Veteran administrator Randy Harris was returned to the helm of local football last night when the Barbados Football Association held its annual general meeting and congress at the Wildey Turf. Harris, the incumbent, scored seven more votes than his challenger - former national goalkeeper Omari Eastmond, to narrowly secure his fourth consecutive term as BFA president with a 37-30 victory. Following a three and a half hour long tension-filled meeting, Harris emerged as the winner just before 8 p.m. Harris, who also serves as President of the Caribbean Football Union and who's also a Concacaf Vice President, outlined his vision for the future… and hinted at this 2024 to 2028 term being his last. In other BFA election results, Chief Executive Officer at the Transport Board, Fabian Wharton, Captain Al Walcott and Ashton Chapman totalled 40, 24 and 17 votes respectively to be elected as vice presidents. Tracia Forde, Wren Ramsay, Simeon Alsopp, Obrien Smith and Shamika Estwick will serve as executive board members. Ferrocement technology could be part of the solution to the water problems faced by farmers. This national programme technician at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Damien Hinds. He made the disclosure while discussing the development of projects between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security and IICA. Ferrocement tanks are built by hand troweling layers of cement mortar onto a wire frame. According to Mr. Hinds, this can be used by farmers to build water storage tanks, to alleviate the problems they face. The agriculture official told the session that attention is also being given to apiculture. He admitted that challenges have been spotted, but the aim is to move apiculture from a hobbyist vocation to a commercial enterprise. Barbados Best-Dos Santos Public Health Laboratory has been recognised by the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation as a National Influenza Centre and as a member of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System. The Bridgetown laboratory joins the likes of the Trinidad and Tobago-based Caribbean Public Health Agency, CARPHA and the Virology Lab located at the University of the West Indies. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley during a recognition ceremony was moved by the designation, stating it is one of immense pride.

Moved by the response to last year's edition of the UWI/RBC Race For the Kids, the first since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers are looking to build on it and are anticipating bigger participation. This year is the 8th edition of the race which is slated for Sunday, April 14. The RBC Race For the Kids started with an inaugural event in New York City. It is now a compelling series of global charitable races supporting children's causes Managing Director of RBC Royal Bank Barbados, Shimon McIntosh says the bank, through its partnership with the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, has been supporting youth and education in Barbados. Mr. McIntosh was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. While registration for the RBC Race for the Kids can be done online, Deputy Principal of UWI Cave Hill, Professor Winston Moore says they have made it easier to do so in person. A senior official of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, IICA, has told Barbados the sector is in good hands. Technical Specialist Dr. Roxanne Waithe made the comment after providing a progress report on initiatives and developments in agriculture between IICA and the Ministry of Agriculture. She says a future farmers think tank has been created by young farmers out of a youth project aimed at maintaining contact with IICA. Ms. Waithe said work is also ongoing to attract women to agriculture. Complaints against Barbados mobile telecommunications providers are on the rise. The Fair Trading Commission is reporting it has been receiving a lot of complaints attributed to the mobile telecommunications sector. Statistics provided by Director of Consumer Protection, Dava Leslie-Ward show that during the period 2013 to 2015, 24 complaints were made. This, however, tripled to 86 from 2016 to 2019. Among the issues identified, consumers are unable to keep up with data notifications. Ms. Leslie-Ward was among the guests for CBC TV8's programme, The People's Business -where the topic, of the mobile telecommunications code was discussed. Ms. Leslie-Ward says the FTC has been assessing the time limits offered by service providers following mobile top-ups. Over 60 businesses were created from 15 different participating schools in this year's Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation 20 Dollar Challenge. Businesses were set up across nine categories but in the end, the top three were food and beverage with 46 % while arts and crafts produced 14% and jewellery with 11%. Speaking at the awards ceremony BEF's Executive Chairperson, Celeste Foster stated that this year was different to others but very rewarding. Also speaking at the award ceremony was Manager of Scotia Bank Haggatt Hall branch, Ryan Carrington. He stated that challenges such as these are beneficial for shaping this and the next generation of entrepreneurs. The Boy Scouts Association of Barbados is aiming to increase its membership, after a significant drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Association has been trying various ways to boost its numbers and the interest of children in becoming scouts. It held its second annual Fun Day in Queen's Park which attracted more than 500 people. Chairman of the Fun Day Committee Jason King says there are some other things in place to attract both youth and adults. Mr. King also says the Boys Scouts Association has been in discussions with the Barbados Defence Force and Barbados Cadet Corp on how to better prepare people to join the force.
