Despite the notion the education system has served Barbados well, Government Senator Andwele Boyce suggests the same cannot be said for persons with disabilities. He believes that segregation limits opportunities. Senator Boyce is, however, pleased with efforts made by Government, some outlined in the recent budget, stating it intends to do better for persons with disabilities. Also of concern for him, is the lack of employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. Senator Boyce acknowledges a fully accessible Barbados cannot happen in the blink of an eye but it is work the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs has committed to. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds is calling on CARICOM member states to redouble their efforts to finalise outstanding fishing agreements. He was speaking during the opening ceremony of a two-day technical workshop on 'The Ratification and Implementation of the World Trade Organisation Fisheries Subsidies Agreement'. Minister Symmonds says while the mandate to complete those agreements has not expired and progress has been made, there is still too much uncertainty in the sector. Minister Symmonds says during a recent trip to Abu Dhabi, officials were unable to reach an agreement relative to overcapacity and overfishing on fishing subsidies. He says there is a role for all involved in the decision making, and urged transparency throughout the process. The workshop, the second in its series, is being hosted by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, CARICOM, the Caribbean Development Bank, and the WTO in Barbados. As Barbados and CARICOM continue on their quest for reparations, a leading Caribbean academic has called on the United Nations to support reparatory justice as a development paradigm. The call by Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles came as he addressed the UN General Assembly in New York to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. He says Caribbean countries know all too well the narrative and the tools of terror as the trade de-humanised Africans. Sir Hilary views the ongoing political turmoil in Haiti as evidence of the international community's failure to address the ills brought about by the transatlantic slave trade. Sir Hilary also urged the UN to recommit to the decolonisation agenda for the remaining Caribbean colonies. Barbados has told the Organisation of American States the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade lives on, contributing to the marginalisation of communities and persons of African descent. The view was shared by Interim Representative of Barbados to the OAS Christobelle Reece during a special meeting of the permanent council to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. She says studies and findings have shown people of African descent still have limited access to quality education, health services, housing and social security. She told the forum insufficient and respect is often given to the efforts of people of African descent who seek redress. Government remains steadfast in its stance to draw the line with any company infringing the rights of workers in Barbados. This assurance from Senator Gregory Nicholls. He notes that the current administration is adamant that any business abusing workers cannot benefit from concessions offered by the Government and the current Labour Clause Legislation has been put in place to ensure that. Senator Nicholls rubbished the Opposition party's claims that the Mia Mottley Government was grandstanding in holding this position opposing big businesses. He made the remark during the BLP St. George North Constituency branch meeting at the Cuthbert Moore Primary School where he spoke on the labour clause legislation. Senator Nicholls says history shows there was a time when the Democratic Labour Party and labour unions had better relations and the workers felt the party had their interest at heart. However, he says, that has all changed.
