Dignitaries, led by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, joined former West Indies and Barbados players this afternoon for the unveiling of the statute to honour fast bowling legend Sir Charles Griffith. The 85-year-old has been immortalised in the form of a statue at Kensington Oval. He joins former teammates - National Hero the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, and Sir Wesley Hall, outside the gates to the region's mecca. Sir Charles' statue was a three-year process, and a product of Sculptor Jason Hope, the same person who crafted the statues of Sir Frank Walcott and Sir Wes Hall. In her remarks, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley defended Government's investment in Kensington Oval, which is the third most iconic cricket venue in the world. The man of the moment, Sir Charles, said the Barbados cricket league, where he first started his career, played a pivotal role in the development of the sport on the island. Opposition Senator Tricia Watson is suggesting that Government will have to go back to the drawing board and revise expected revenue in this year's estimates. During her contribution to the Appropriation Bill, 2024, in the Upper House earlier, Senator Watson said there was an absence of an explanation as to where Government intended to recoup the $1.5 billion deficit. Senator Watson said following what occurred in 2018 when Barbadians had been asked to invest in Government bonds, Government seemed surprised that people were no longer interested in investing. A Barbados diplomat believes if legislative changes are adopted to allow third-generation descendants living in the United Kingdom to acquire citizenship, there would be a surge in applications. That Is the view of Deputy High Commissioner, Mackie Holder. He was speaking to Barbadian journalists during a courtesy call made possible by the British High Commission. Mr. Holder says the grandchildren of Barbadians, who are living in England, are interested in becoming citizens of the island. He was also questioned on whether a change in legislation like this would assist in the Government's efforts to increase the island’s population. Thousands of Christians here in Barbados joined millions across the world in today's observance of Palm Sunday. Several congregations across the island participated in traditional processions with palms leaves and crosses in their hands. Palm Sunday commemorates the Christian belief in the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, when he was greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches that they set out on the ground along his path. Also known as Passion Sunday, it marks the start of Holy Week, the most sacred week of the Christian year. Over at the St. George Parish Church, Reverend Suzette Archer reminded Barbadians of the saving grace and love of Christ. And over in the City, at the St. Patrick's Cathedral, Father Vibert Stephens related the relevance of the Palm Sunday and Easter stories to the present day.
