Holy Week is here and with it comes a commitment to eating fish for many Christians who abstain from consuming other types of meat. A CBC team visited fish markets around the island to see how sales were going as the Easter weekend approaches. Most vendors were in high spirits about fish sales this Holy Week. Local sporting icons and officials gathered with family and friends at the Wildey Gymnasium this morning for the farewell service of former national basketballer and netballer Shakira Shorey. Mother, teacher, player, coach, manager, referee and elected officials were some of the roles that gained Shakira ultimate respect, as tributes were presented during an emotional ceremony. Sports Minister Charles Griffith and BOA President Sandra Osborne were a few that joined the congregation, in remembering the postitive legacy she has left. There are some exciting changes on the way for the Barbados Cadet Corps. Drones and engineer training are some of the topics and skills that will be offered in the curriculum for members moving into the future. As they work to tackle transnational crime, Barbados and the Caribbean have been advised about implementing strategies to undermine the strength of organised crime groups. The Regional Security System (RSS) says they need to improve governance, the rule of law, and the delivery of social services along with employment. Executive Director, Commodore Errington Shurland told the opening of the RSS Council of Ministers' Meeting in Guyana, transnational crimes are enabled by weak governance, which allows corruption to flourish. Commodore Shurland says the Barbados-based RSS understands the strategic importance of robust counter transnational organised crime responses and the protection of maritime and cyber spaces of member states. There's strong support tonight for incentives to motivate people to start saving for retirement. It comes as the Barbados Association of Retired Persons and the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs prepare to host a one-day conference on retirement. Speaking at a press conference, Minister Kirk Humphrey stated he looks forward to the day Government can offer such a package that would motivate people to consider saving from young. Meanwhile President of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons Marilyn Rice-Bowen expressed concern some elderly people are facing the consequences of failing to plan properly for retirement. Not a lot is being invested in track and field in Barbados. That's the opinion of President of the Athletics Association of Barbados, Noel Lynch. He says it's costing roughly $100,000 to send the CARIFTA team to Grenada. Mr. Lynch added that it has been too long that Barbados has been without a national stadium. He was addressing the unfortunate circumstances that surround the CARIFTA athletes' preparations. The CARIFTA Games will be broadcast live on CBC TV8 from March 30 to April 1. Fire officers attached to the station of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) temporarily walked off the job Wednesday morning, as they called for a resolution to issues with security at the airport fire station. For close to two hours the workers were locked in discussions with personnel from the Grantley Adams International Airport and the Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard following the early morning demonstration. At the conclusion of the talks, chairman of the Barbados Fire Service Association, Corrie Bridgeman, informed the media that the morning protest was the result of several calls from staff regarding ongoing issues relative to security. Combermere are double crown champions of the 2024 Dasani Powerade BSSAC championships. On the final day of the meet today at the Usain Bolt Complex, Combermere won the boy's section with 285 points 48 points ahead of Harrison College with 237, while Christ Church Foundation were third on 213.5. In the girl's, Combermere took the title with 19.5 margin on 279 points. The St. Michael School were 2nd on 259.5 and The Alleyne School 3rd on 216. Combermere athletes featured in many finals today, including the under-17 and under-20 200 metres. Of note, no records fell at this years meet, but there was keen competition throughout including the under-13 and under-15 400 metres. By next week scores of the sugar industry workers at the two privately owned companies, the Agricultural Business Company (ABC Ltd), and the Barbados Energy and Sugar Company (BESCO Ltd.) should have received all of their outstanding severance payments. Word of this from Deputy General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union, Dwaine Paul. He says this follows successful talks with the company's management as well as the Chairman of the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC). Mr. Paul considers this the start of doing right by the many hard-working employees within the industry. Mr. Paul says with contracts for full-time employment on the horizon he is positive that it will empower workers to become owners and as a consequence help to reshape the industry.

The Barbados Auto Racing League is back after a four-year hiatus from circuit racing. It was back in October 2020 when the 28-year-old club hosted the event, a time attack and track day drifting at the iconic Bushy Park, which attracted forty cars and drivers. League Chair Stefan Hinds says this year's racing season kicks off with circuit racing and a time attack event on April 21. He also stressed that after a decade of shifts and changes in the club and in motor sport by extension, BARL is in the process of rebuilding.
