Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is making it abundantly clear Government's debt restructuring efforts have been reaping great gains. During her wrap up of the Appropriation Bill, 2024, Ms. Mottley says growth to date is at 0.6% in real terms and 0.5% in nominal terms. She has also reported that Barbados' unemployment rate is significantly down. According to her, as of December 2023 the country's unemployment rate stood at 7.9%. There have been more positive revelations in the House about Barbados' major revenue earner, tourism. According to Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill, winter 2024/2025 airlift is expected to expand by more than 85,000 seats. Mr. Gooding-Edghill says the growth is led largely by the return of several airlines to the island from the US, UK and Canadian markets. The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology has joined forces with a group of like-minded organisations to work on combatting the effects of climate change in climate sensitive sectors. However, Principal Dr. David Farrell says as talks of climate change and vulnerabilities continue, more needs to be done to deal with the issue. The Regional Workshop on National Frameworks on Climate Services in the Caribbean is being held at the Accra Beach Hotel. It's a collaboration of a number of agencies including the CIMH, the World Metereological Organisation and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Dr. Farrell says the journey in climate services started over a decade ago, but Barbados is nowhere near where it ought to be in the fight on climate change. Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dwight Sutherland has cleared the air on the ownership of Home Ownership Providing Energy or HOPE Inc. He says HOPE is a commercial state-owned enterprise with Government as the lone shareholder and not a private entity. The Minister has also made it clear there's nothing nefarious about the letter presented yesterday by Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne and listed the lands which have been vested by the National Housing Corporation in HOPE. Mr. Sutherland says some 15 sites will be used to provide homes to ordinary Barbadians. A new fuel is now available to Barbadian motorists. It was unveiled by petroleum company Sol Barbados Limited, at a ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Regional Manager Marketing Rochene Yarde told specially invited guests the new fuel is designed for better fuel economy. Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Works, Dr. Romel Springer, is in full support of the proposed 5 personal days for public servants. Dr. Springer was making his contribution this morning during the Appropriation Bill 2024. He said workers no longer had to feel guilty about taking much needed days to go to the doctor, or take care of ailing family members. However, Dr. Springer said he hoped workers did not abuse the allowance. The measures are set to take effect on June 1, 2024. She has advised by harnessing the collective strengths and resources, citizens of the two regions stand to benefit.
