Close to 150 young Barbadian athletes have benefitted thus far since the introduction of the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) programme for student athletes seeking placements in US colleges and universities. The programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment. According to Minister Charles Griffith, 147 people have completed the programme. Minister Griffith sees the programme as necessary. He was at the time addressing a workshop for student athletes hosted by the US Embassy at the Roy Marshall Complex of the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. Minister Griffith further revealed plans to have a sports psychologist on staff at the National Sports Council. Young people have been cautioned to think carefully about what they post online. The advice from Madame Justice Barbara Cooke-Alleyne, as she addressed Team Bridgetown graduates of the King's Trust International Programme. She's expressed concern that online posts can leave a footprint even after they are deleted. 15 young people participated in the programme which, among other things, taught them responsibility, improved communication skills and stressed the importance of giving back to the community. 17-year-old Reanna Bowen was judged the most outstanding graduate. Bowen, along with another graduate Michael Barry, were among the participants who spoke positively about the 12 week programme. Businesses have a critical role to play in supporting the youth of the nation. That's according to President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry James Clarke who is calling on business leaders to begin investing in youth focused initiatives and mentorship programmes. Mr. Clarke says businesses shape the lives of young men through creating internship opportunities, fostering entrepreneurship and investing in initiatives that empower the next generation. He was addressing the opening of the Chamber's "From Boys to Men" discussion held to commemorate International Men's Day 2024. The event, designed to foster resilience and purpose in the next generation of men, empowered the participants with tools for managing challenges facing young men in today's society. Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce confirmed in his press conference that the controversial death of homeless man Albert John was by natural causes despite his injuries. The 62 year old, who police said, was from Kensington New Road, The City, who died on November 3rd. It was the same day he presented himself at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with injuries. Since then his death was the subject of public debate after reports emerged that he had been beaten by a group in King Street, also in the City. (Video by Reco Moore)

A senior Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security official is advising school authorities to keep the surroundings clean and garbage bins covered at all times to reduce the presence of bees on their properties. Senior Agricultural Assistant Bernard Thompson is giving the advice amid concerns about issues with bees at schools, including Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary, in recent weeks. Classes there have been disrupted on two occasions. Mr. Thompson is urging children and adults not to run or keep noise if bees are hovering around them. He says they attack and sting when they feel threatented. Barbados remains regional leaders in the culinary arena. They proved this by retaining the Caribbean National Team of the Year title at this year's Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association's Taste of the Caribbean competition. Barbados went up against six other countries, and impressed the judges after winning the last competition held in 2019. The way is being paved for more individuals and businesses to be able to treat water for non-potable use, a move officials say can help the island with some of it's water shortage issues. Barbados has welcomed the launch of a new initiative, aimed at fast tracking financial support for vulnerable countries to protect against climate and disaster risks. Ambassador Elizabeth Thompson, Sherpa to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on matters related to the CVF-V20 Barbados Presidency, officially launched the Global Shield Ambition on Wednesday. The event took place at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties or COP29 in Azerbaijan. Delivering the featured address, Ambassador Thompson underscored the importance of the initiative for debt-strapped countries like those in the Caribbean. Ambassador Thompson says the Global Shield Ambition offers proven, pre-arranged, country-owned financial solutions which help to create liquidity as the country needs it. The Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit has suggested the Prison Service may need to strengthen its rehabilitation programmes, given Barbados' high recidivism rate. Director Cheryl Willoughby says recent research points to a link between recidivism and rehabilitation. She was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. The National Crime Prevention and Reduction Unit has been working alongside the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit to secure data, in order to plan and execute programmes to assist Barbadian youth. The second Regional Symposium on Crime, which is being hosted by Barbados in Guyana, got underway with a warning to criminals from Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley. They have been told Caribbean states will snuff out embers that fuel crime in the region. Dr. Rowley is upbeat, as he reported progress has been made with regard to the CARICOM Arrest Warrant legislation. In his address, President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali focused on the impact crime is having on regional economies. He says states are spending up to 31% of their expenditure directly and indirectly in the crime fight. President Ali says research shows the majority of crimes are being committed by young men. "Violence as a Public Health Issue – The Crime Challenge" is the theme for the Symposium. Heads of Government will also participate in roundtable discussions focusing on cultural influences on crime, the role of music and its influence on crime and the reform of the criminal justice sector and offender management. The Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, CDEMA has signalled its support for trigger points within the Loss and Damage Fund. The fund is a financing mechanism which helps developing countries respond to the economic and non-economic losses and damages caused by climate change. Executive Director Elizabeth Riley wants to see movements on the matter in this regard at the UN Climate Change Conference or COP29 in Azerbaijan. She says financing will always be a challenge for small states. Ms. Riley was among the panel for a side event hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank titled: 'Strengthening Hydro Meteorological and Early Warning Systems in the Caribbean'.
