The brand new red and white Regupol track named after Barbados’ distinguished 110m hurdler Ryan Brathwaite was officially declared open this morning at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. During the opening ceremony, held just before 10 a.m., Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Campus, Professor Clive Landis, led a group of officials to cut the ribbon at the finish line. Among those was the Head of UWI Academy of Sports, Dr Rudolph Alleyne; Co-Chair of the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, Sonja Goodridge; Assistant Meet Director, Andrew Brathwaite and General Manager at Infinity on the Beach Hotel, Rene Coppin. The 2024 Barbados Netball Association season was officially opened over the weekend at the Wildey Gymnasium. Three new teams have joined the roster for this year’s competition – they are Parish Land Flight Crew, St. Andrew Ballers and the Shooting Stars. Play will begin in the 10 divisions today and there will be some new initiatives to enhance the standard of play. In his feature address, Minister of Sports Charles Griffith revealed that the much-needed redevelopment of the Netball Stadium at Waterford is set to begin in short order. Tomorrow's World Triathlon Americas Cup will be a very important race for leading national triathlete Matthew Wright. A podium finish will cement his ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics, and the prospect of achieving that on home soil is one he relishes. Much hasn't changed in his preparation, as it was just about building on his success from last year. 36 elite triathletes from the Americas are set to compete tomorrow on the Mighty Grynner Highway from 7:00 a.m., as they seek to increase their point scores in the ongoing Olympics selection process. The registered start list includes 23 male and 12 female athletes from Austria, Canada, USA, Peru, Hungary, Spain, Netherlands, Grenada and Barbados. Five Bajan athletes are down to face the starter. The Barbados Bankers Association is sharing its hopes for the upcoming Budget. All of the plantations are ready to go for Monday's start of the sugar cane harvest. That's the word from Chairman of the Barbados Sugar Industry Limited Mark Sealy. He says the plantations were ready to begin by the original date of February 15, and with more acres being harvested this season he expects an increase in sugar production. Mr. Sealy also says some of the plantations and farms have come together to enhance the technology and machines which will help make the process a lot easier. At least 33 per cent of the country’s unemployed citizens are people with disabilities, and 2 000, of the 6 000 citizens in the Welfare Department’s National Assistance of Welfare programme are classified as people with disabilities. This is according to director of the National Disabilities Unit (NDU), John Hollingsworth, who attributed much of this as a cause of employer’s attitudes towards the capabilities of disabled people. Hollingsworth made those remarks on Wednesday during the Health & Wellness Fair held at the NDU Complex, Maxwelton, Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael.(Video by Reco Moore)

According to Director of the Psychiatric Hospital David Leacock, this is evident at the Black Rock facility and at the island's polyclinics. The situation has however not resulted in an significant increase in admissions at the Hospital. Sponsors of the annual Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships have been acknowledged for their role in the development of track and field in Barbados. Despite some setbacks with the completion of the track at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, sponsors say they are fully committed to the Championship's success. During a ceremony at Queen's College on Thursday evening, title sponsor Dasani-Powerade and a number of others said they are happy to be on board once again. Co-chair of the BSSAC Organising Committee, Andrew Brathwaite, says with forced changes to the meet due to the initial unavailability of the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, he expects the rivalry to be intense. Aspects of the meet will also be named after two ladies who recently passed away and would have contributed significantly to the competition. Tickets for the semi-finals and finals will be available for $20 and $25 respectively at Duty Free Barbados and Esso Black Rock.
