Given the high prevalence of glaucoma in Barbados, ophthalmologists continue to stress the importance of early detection and treatment. People who sustained minor injuries to the eye are also deemed at risk later in life. Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Dawn Grosvenor says glaucoma is a tricky disease, calling it the silent thief of sight. She says in the early stages, it produces no signs or symptoms. Dr. Grosvenor was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Focus continues to be placed on the disease this World Glaucoma Week through a range of activities. Barbadians are encouraged to wear green on Friday to show their support for the 'Go Green For Glaucoma' campaign. With the University of the West Indies facing a 50 million US dollar shortfall in its budget, Barbados and the region have been told this deficit will not deter or weaken the institution's role. Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, during the annual meeting of the UWI St. Augustine Council, says plans have been devised by Campus managers to cover the budget shortfall. Sir Hilary says no matter the financial situation, UWI will continue to strengthen and enhance the academic output of the University. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley officially opened Barbados’ newest tourism attraction yesterday. The Haymans Market, converted from the former Haymans Sugar Factory in St Peter, is now an entertainment centre, vendors’ market and tourism accommodation. Mottley said it was the kind of tourism feature more of which Barbados needs. She said since the island was small, it was important to make maximum use of the land areas. The Prime Minister also commended chairman of the Sun Group, Bernie Weatherhead, for using capital to invest in the venture and also for providing a facility that gives opportunities to small Barbadian business people. Ricardo Gill, owner of the container business called The Wing Shop assures he is conducting a lawful operation in a commercial zone. German visitor Stefrnea (Stefaine) Koppan who lives next door to the container made several complaints about issues she has been having with Gill's food establishment. A container engulfed by fire in the densely populated Deacons, St. Michael area prompted a swift response from emergency officials yesterday afternoon. The blaze occurred at First Avenue, Farm Road. Fire officials, who were on the scene along with police, said they received the call just after 2:30 pm and responded with one tender and four officers, led by Station Officer Angela Reveira. She told CBC News the container was owned by Taariq Boodhoo and explained what they encountered on arrival. The skills and talents of Barbadians were on show as the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus highlighted African culture. The event, an African Awareness Fashion Show brought together staff, students and participants from tertiary and other institutions to showcase a variety of African outfits, hairstyles, and jewellery. Coordinator Teresacita Cox is optimistic through the event students will be empowered. Despite being scaled down, support from the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust enabled the event to be staged. The number of Barbadians between stage one and four of chronic kidney disease is a worry for the Barbados Kidney Association. Barbados this World Kidney Day is onboard with the global campaign spreading awareness about the importance of healthy kidneys and how one can maintain kidney health and prevent disease. Activities are being observed under the theme "Kidney Health For All - Advancing Equitable Access to Care and Optimal Medication Practice". President of the Association, Allen Haynes says that over 300 people are on dialysis - the last stage of kidney disease. While heredity plays a factor in kidney disease, he says non communicable diseases also have an impact. Mr. Haynes was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Barbados was represented at a regional forum for youth who met to brainstorm on disaster risk reduction education and strategies to keep schools safe. The virtual meeting formed part of the 2024 Caribbean Safe School Initiative Pre-Ministerial Forum of Ministers of Education. Barbados CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Ashley Lashey, in her presentation, posited that while some communities may be aware of the risks, others may lack access to accurate information and resources. She says improving awareness of hazards and the ability of communities to take proactive measures is critical. Ms. Lashley adds schools also need the necessary psychosocial support.

The Barbados Association of Dragsters and Drifters revved off their 2024 season with the 'Drag Rivals Round One Event' at the Busy Park Racetrack recently. Five persons are currently tied for the 'Champion Driver' title after this first event, while Rommell Alleyne with a time of 7.77secs in the one-eighth mile, set a new front-wheel drive record. Barbados and CARICOM have told a high-level meeting about the linkages between improved access to financing for development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG's cannot and should not be ignored. The 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women heard from Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey that the eradication of poverty is central to reducing women's vulnerability to climate change and other adversities. He says programmes and policies must focus on building the capacity of women and girls in a holistic manner. Mr. Humphrey who spoke on behalf of CARICOM signalled the bloc's unwavering commitment to the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all women and girls. The University of the West Indies despite being tested by the recent COVID-19 says the world of higher education has become extremely competitive since the pandemic. According to UWI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, universities are competing more aggressively than ever, likening it to an almost cutthroat situation for a diminishing number of students. He says the capacity of a university to survive today is based on how effective it will be in building out global partnerships and collaborations. Sir Hilary's comments came during the annual meeting of the council of the St. Augustine Campus. The St. Augustine Campus has recorded a decline in enrollment figures, it was revealed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, Professor Rose Marie Belle Antoine. Jehovah's Witnesses in Barbados will join with millions across the world on March 24 to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. The memorial is considered the most important day of the year for Jehovah's Witnesses. National Spokesperson for Barbados, Creig Jones says members are extending invitations to Barbadians. The event will be open to the public at all Kingdom Halls on island. Mr. Jones, who was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados, says Jehovah's Witnesses on island continue to share their faith based on the Bible.
