The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is highlighting the need for Barbados and the region to increase resilience in schools given the ever-present threats. Executive Director Elizabeth Riley says the Caribbean is uniquely vulnerable to a myriad of natural and man-made hazards. She says schools are on the front line of these threats. However, she told a Caribbean Safe School Initiative Virtual Pre-Ministerial Forum countries shouldn't be daunted. Chair of the Council of Ministers of CDEMA and Minister of Education in St. Lucia, Shawn Edward stressed countries in an area marked by escalating climate impacts and natural disasters, must fortify communities, infrastructure and institutions to withstand and recover from adversity. He says schools are not only educational institutions as their resilience is crucial to the overall wellbeing of Caribbean communities. Barbados wants support for the Caribbean in providing healthy foods for the region. Director of Government Analytical Services, Beverley Wood urged the Food and Agriculture Organisation to place greater emphasis on strengthening laboratory capacity to analyse the nutritional content of foods. The call was made on day two of the 38th FAO Regional Conference. Ms. Wood, in welcoming the FAO's development of the Food Control Assessment Tool, says the country looks forward to guidance in its use. Amid concerns over the selection process for a new Chief Executive Officer for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Most Honourable Jerome Walcott is assuring the process was open. He also made it clear that he did not interfere in the selection process. Dr. Walcott was at the time responding to Opposition Leader, Ralph Thorne who raised his concerns as the Estimates Debates shifted to the Health and Wellness Head. Despite the strides made in his Ministry, Dr. Walcott says there are a number of challenges in the health sector to be addressed. It was revealed that a wider National Nutritional Policy and an expanded community mental health programme are on the cards. On the latter, Dr. Walcott says this will be complemented by mental health action plan. The Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) has been expanded to reach potential entrepreneurs where they are - in communities. That disclosure came from Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith during Debate on the 62 million dollar appropriation grant to his Ministry for 2024-2025. Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne has suggested that the Government reconsider its plan to construct 13 mini-stadia. He believes it would be more feasible to have three or four facilities set up at strategic points across the island. Mr Thorne also stated that the stadiums should cater to more than just cricket. The Estimates Debate resumed today, continuing with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment. It was revealed that the Barbados Youth Advance Corps (BYAC) is expected to have a new facility to call home in two years during today’s Parliamentary session. The Corps' Director Hally Haynes says that upon completion, the plant will house 300 individuals per intake. He adds that it will significantly bolster the organisation's efforts to respond to the developmental needs of young people. Mr Haynes was at the time responding to a question regarding the 11 million dollars allocated to the BYAC for the next fiscal year. Barbados Ambassador to Venezuela, Commander Aquinas Clarke says Caracas, given its location, is positioned to contribute to CARICOM's 25 by 2025 initiative aimed at reducing the region's food import bill. Since the announcement by Venezuela of its intentions to provide five thousand hectares of agricultural land to Barbados, a team from the island visited the country to see first-hand the different farming areas. Ambassador Clarke says trade and other exchanges have been further boosted with the improvements made in transport and the direct flights to Caracas. Ambassador Clarke was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Ambassador Clarke says Barbados remains committed to its 2030 target to give every Barbadian under the age of 18 an opportunity to be bilingual. A national agricultural census is to be conducted in Barbados. That's the word from Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security, Terry Bascombe. He says the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO)will be assisting Barbados in this regard. The revelation was made during an FAO Senior Officers Meeting. According to Mr. Bascombe, the agency has been working with Barbados in several areas and he extended gratitude for all the work undertaken.
