A vastly improved outdoor vendors market is coming for the Mighty Grynner Highway. Word of this came from President of the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN), Alistair Alexander. He told the Business Report vendors are looking forward to the development. The vendors' association president said it is a two-year project and is set to move the sector to the next level. A break-in at the Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary resulted in classes being cancelled. The Education Ministry said it was notified that the staff room and the pre-fabricated buildings were breached. Police were summoned and their investigations revealed that two laptops and some cleaning supplies were missing. The computers were recovered soon afterwards. The Minister said parents who turned up insisted on taking their children out of school, thereby resulting in no classes being held today. Meanwhile, that incident has prompted another call for security at primary schools across Barbados to be beefed up. It came from the Shop Steward at the Barbados Union of Teachers, Pedro Shepherd, who is also the Information Technology Teacher at the school. Trevor Thorpe reports. Some thirty people who live in Christ Church East will form the first group that gets another opportunity to qualify themselves with Caribbean Examination Council Certificates. Entitled CXC Second Chance Programme it will cater to those in the constituency who left school without any academic qualifications. It was launched last evening at the St. Christopher primary school. Educator Stephanie chase conceptualised and put together the programme. Member of Parliament for Christ Church East, Home Affairs Minister, Wilfred Abrahams shared that the programme is costing about thirty thousand dollars. The funding is coming from the Hopewell Charity and other donors. There is no age limit for people wishing to enter the programme and Minister Abrahams urged those taking part to make full use of the opportunity and do well so others can benefit. German visitor Stefrnea (Stefaine) Koppan who has been coming to Barbados for more than 40 years says her peace and tranquility have been shattered by a container food business. Koeppan, who is now 80 years old has a rental home at Oistins, Christ Church, which she has been utilising for over 20 years, spending four months annually on vacation. However, for the past two years her vacation has been spoiled by noise and what she calls an unbearable stench. It's coming from Executive Director and Founder of the Katrina Endometriosis Women's Health Association of Barbados, Katrina Alleyne. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has been undertaking work on lowering the cost of financing to benefit countries like Barbados. Special Advisor on Climate Change at the IDB, Professor Avinash Persaud says this has been evident with new debt swaps and the Barbados-inspired natural disaster clauses. Professor Persaud was among the speakers for a discussion on financial innovations and their impact on the region at the annual meeting of the IDB in the Dominican Republic. He says however more needs to be done.
An update was given on a plan to expand the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme into the region. Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith explains it will be done in partnership with the University of the West Indies' School of Continuing Studies. A major community-building initiative has been launched as the island prepares to host the ICC T20 World Cup. The Connect Barbados Volunteer Programme encourages Barbadians to contribute their time and skills to give back to their communities. Minister of Youth, Sport and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, has urged those signing up to be committed to Barbados' World Cup effort. Speaking at the launch held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Mr Griffith noted that volunteerism can play a pivotal role in helping Barbados put on a successful campaign. Mr Griffith states several other sporting disciplines could benefit from the Volunteer Connect programme. He has also asked for volunteers to help with mentoring the younger generation. The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) is addressing concerns about increases in land tax and the use of agricultural land versus residential. The Manager of Communications and PR at BRA, Carolyn Williams-Gayle, says the issue has been aired publicly in recent times. She says the Barbados Revenue Authority's remit is to value and tax the land according to the prescribed land usage. Ms Gayle explains that land usage is determined by the planning and development department. A C. O. Williams truck tore down the telephone lines in Bathsheba just after midday on Saturday. As a result, internet service in the area is out. Flow crews are on site working to restore the service. This is the second time in about two days that the movement of large trucks and tractors has been involved with telephone lines. These vehicles are working on a major private development overlooking the Soup Bowl. Drivers of these vehicles are urged to exercise more care and attention as they travel through the area. There is a plan in place to implement financial literacy into the educational curriculum. Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Sandra Husbands, spoke about this at the opening of the University of the West Indies' International Women's Day celebrations. During the forum, she stated that she has had conversations with all the persons who would head tertiary institutions on how they can add a financial aspect to various majors.
