Barbados' sixth Commissioner of Police since Independence, Grantley Watson, has been laid to rest. His life and legacy were celebrated in a service of thanksgiving at St. Thomas Parish Church. The career law enforcement officer, who died on February 3rd at age 80, was today accorded an official funeral with military honours. Joshua Hinkson reports. Six new disciplines have been added for the 2024 National Senior Games. This was revealed by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey, during the launch of this year's games. Barbados joins in the global commemorations this International Women's Day, as citizens, the Government and organisations pay respect and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women and girls. This year's global theme, 'Inspire Inclusion' highlights that women's participation in society is essential. The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) acknowledged the strides made by women locally, regionally and globally. President Marilyn Rice-Bowen pledged the Association's commitment to facilitating and advocating for other organisations and agencies, Government and the business community to support women in all spheres of life. Leader of the Opposition, Ralph Thorne has expressed concern about Barbados losing its young people, who are leaving to live overseas. He called attention to the issue during his presentation to the Youth, Sports and Community Development Head of the Estimates Debate. Commemorative rums are being produced to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the CARICOM Community and Common Market (CARICOM). Word of this from Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Rum and Spirit Producers Association, Vaughn Renwick as regional rum makers prepare to unveil commemorative products. The rum official says up to twelve producers are expected to taking part in the anniversary celebrations. Mr. Renwick says interest in the initiative is high. Minister of Sports Charles Griffith says he is pleased with the continued work on the new Ryan Brathwaite Track at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. The new track has already been laid and the marking of lanes is expected to begin tomorrow. Work on the track started in early February which forced NAPSAC and BSSAC officials to postpone the premier junior athletic meet on the island by two weeks. Today, Griffith along with Senior Youth Commissioner responsible for Community Sport Shawn Burke and UWI's Director of Marketing and Communications Chelston Lovell toured the facility and provided the media with an update. Combermere maintained their lead in both the Boys and Girls divisions as the field events for this year's Dasani-Powerade BSSAC concluded today at Harrison College. Combermere are out front in the Girls with 83 points, while Alleyne School are second with 75 and SMS third on 70. In the boys, Combermere are ahead with 101 points followed by Queen's College 73 and Harrison College third with 46 points. CBC's Anmar Goodridge-Boyce reports. Barbados needs to develop a culture of positive experimentation if the country intends to compete successfully in the global arena. Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, Marsha Caddle made the suggestion while participating in a "Fireside Chat" hosted by Future Barbados, at its Innovation Ignite Seminar series last evening at the Walled Garden Theatre. The Minister believes that Barbadian values can be integrated into research and development, which is a critical component of innovation. While comparing Barbados' education system to highly innovative countries, Minister Caddle believes the culture of experimentation and exploration should be built in schools to allow students to innovate and think differently. Barbadians are tonight being encouraged to ask questions of vendors when purchasing produce. The advice from Acting Chief Agricultural Officer Michael James in light of what seems to be a prevalence of praedial larceny. Speaking on the sidelines of the Estimates Debate at Parliament, Mr. James said not only farmers are being impacted by the theft of their produce. He says Barbadians must be cautious when purchasing produce. The Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology has honoured one of its own renaming the sports centre after the late Jeffrey Yarde. Mr. Yarde, a math instructor, retired in 2000 and died in 2003. His children Quincy and Rachael Yarde were present as they accepted an award on his behalf from Chairperson of the Board of Management of SJPI Mrs. Coreen Kennedy-Taitt. Principal Ian Drakes says Yarde was one of many who set the hallmark at SJPI for those to follow. Deputy Director of the National Sports Council Emerson Bascombe who spoke on behalf of Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith, said Mr. Yarde was a cornerstone of the institution and an avid sports enthusiast. The renaming of the complex is just one of many activities planned to commemorate the institution's milestone as it celebrates 55 years of innovative excellence, under the theme " Embracing Technology, Empowering the Future".
