Violence has escalated as gangs ramp up pressure on Prime Minister Ariel Henry to secure a political settlement. CARICOM Chairman and President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali described the unfolding situation in Haiti as complex. Barbados and the region on the eve of International Women's Day have heard countries still have a long way to go towards equity, eradicating harmful gender stereotypes and ending all forms of violence. While acknowledging the strides made regarding law and policy, Commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Roberta Clarke has told the Organisation of American States, OAS that public policy gaps remain evident today. Ms. Clarke was at the time addressing a Special Meeting of the OAS Permanent Council to commemorate International Women's Day. The lobby for implementation of front-of-package warning labels is intensifying. The latest effort involves the launch of a media campaign by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados at the Golden Square Freedom Park in Bridgetown. Chairperson of the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition, Professor Anne St. John says concern remains that many prepackaged foods have high levels of added sugars, sodium, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. She says nutrition warning systems are important to tackle the growing problem of chronic non communicable diseases. President of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners Dr. Lynda Williams says several Barbadians are considered medically obese and are at risk of developing major health problems. She says ways must be found to avoid a crisis. Combermere have taken the lead in both the Boys and Girls sections at the end of day two at this year's Dasani-Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championship at Harrison College. The athletes from Waterford are out front in the Girls with 51 points, followed by Alleyne School - 47 and SMS Cougars 41. In the boys, Combermere have a 10 point lead over Queen's College. The Barbados Defence Force is preparing to send troops to Haiti as part of a multi-national intervention to help restore order there. It comes some 30 years after the island's last deployment to Haiti for Operation: Restore Democracy. Military Advisor to the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Lovell, made the disclosure this morning at the launch of the BDF’s 45th anniversary celebrations at St. Ann’s Fort, the Garrison, St. Michael. While he cannot say how soon troops will be deployed, Lt. Col. Lovell has revealed the BDF is in the planning stages. Lieutenant Colonel Lovell adds the BDF is currently in discussions with other governments across the region, as part of CARICOM’s commitment to finding a solution to the unrest in Haiti. Regarding the anniversary celebrations this year, Mr. Lovell says several activities are planned for this year under the theme "Proving Excellence, Shaping the Future". They include an inaugural media boot camp and the 120th anniversary of the Cadet Corps. He's underscored the importance of the BDF's role locally and regionally. Small island developing states are facing challenges in the race to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The revelation was made by Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight as she addressed the Annual Coordination Meeting for the United Nations Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework at Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord's Castle today. She told the meeting, attended by Government and private sector stakeholders from the Dutch and English-speaking Caribbean, development finance to fight climate change is diminishing in quality and quantity. The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc has its eyes set on creating a linkage between Barbados and Africa this year. That's according to BTMI Chairman Shelly Williams. She was responding to comments that enough was not being done to tap into that market. Another call has been made for the establishment of a Scotland District Authority. Experienced farmers in Barbados will be working alongside young farmers when the Ministry of Agriculture establishes a Crop Production Unit. Minister Indar Weir expects it to be set up this year as officials work to increase production. The announcement came as discussion continued on the Agriculture Head during the Estimates Debate. He expects the partnership will augur well for the agricultural sector. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC) Fredrick Inniss says many experienced farmers are willing to provide the necessary support. Schoolchildren are expected to be exposed to new innovations in agriculture with the construction of a multi-million dollar facility. Agriculture Minister Indar Weir, says phase one of construction for a tissue culture lab will also include an innovation centre. 42.7 million dollars has been allocated to the first phase of the project, and the Solicitor General's Chambers is currently reviewing the contract with the developer. Mr. Weir says once approved, he's hopeful work will begin by early next month.
