Barbados has been removed from the updated UK list of high-risk third countries. Attorney General Dale Marshall says this is consistent with the country's removal from the FATF Grey List under enhanced supervision. One of the benefits of the removal from these lists redounds to correspondent banking. Housing Minister Dwight Sutherland says Government is moving to address the demand for housing locally and it will provide more homes for citizens. Speaking at the Barbados Labour Party's St. George South branch meeting last evening, Mr. Sutherland revealed 727 houses were built last year while 304 have been constructed already for this year. Senior Minister with Responsibility for the Productive Sector, Kerrie Symmonds responded to recent allegations made by businessman Anderson Cherry. Minister Symmonds was speaking at the Barbados Labour Party's St. George South branch meeting last evening. The Minister notes the government has not been consolidating wealth nor has it been discriminating against black-owned businesses. Thirty-eight thousand animals are slaughtered in Barbados annually. The revelation came from Chairman of Southern Meats Incorporated, Sherwin Greenidge as he addressed a church service at the Calvary Temple Community Church, Groves, St. Philip, to mark the 25th anniversary of the company. Southern Meats presented a cheque to the church, Mr. Greenidge said it accounts for the lion's share of the slaughtering market. The chairman told the congregation, which included Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir, that an initiative that includes farmers' advisers, is already in place to improve the lot of the sector. Government has allocated 4.1 million dollars in this year's estimates to employ professional consultants at the airport. Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill says these persons will come into the air navigation services department to advise and assess what is already in place in order to build out the airport's capacity. A woman was rescued from her vehicle after a collision near the Graeme Hall roundabout in Christ Church moments ago. There was no information on the extent of any injuries when our videographer Christopher Wood captured the incident. The Barbados Consumer Empowerment Network (BCEN) is calling for amendments to the island's Consumer Protection Act. Executive Director of BCEN, Maureen Holder, believes provision should be made for consumers to return, refund, or exchange unused products purchased in error. Ms Holder suggests such an amendment would align with global best practices and offer protection to some of the more vulnerable consumer groups in society. Another one of Barbados' outstanding cultural ambassadors has published a book. Aptly titled "All Over De Place", Wayne 'Poonka' Willock launched his autobiography yesterday before a number of close friends including cutural icon the Most Honourable Anthony "The Mighty Gabby" Carter at the Accra Beach Hotel. Business Development Officer at the National Cultural Foundation Disa Forde-Cooke in her presentation said it is important to tell the stories of the present so those in the future can understand why those in the past did what they did. Just call him Alex the broom man! He has become a fixture along the busy junction of Collymore Rock and Pine Road, St Michael, where he makes and sells straw brooms. Pointing out that broom-making was a popular tradition in Jamaica, where he was born, Alex admitted he learnt the trade here. “I happened to meet up with this man who makes brooms and by talking and talking I got involved too,” he said, smiling. Alex said while the broom, which is made from palm leaves, was not losing its history, there was a need for more people to become involved in making it.
