James ‘Jim’ Wedderburn, the first Barbadian to win an Olympic medal, was honoured with a bust at the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) Headquarters yesterday morning as a token of appreciation for his outstanding contribution to athletics. BOA President Sandra Osborne and Director of the Caribbean Wax Museum, Arthur Edwards, assisted in the unveiling. Wedderburn, a former student of The Lodge School, brought Barbados its first Olympic honour at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, as part of the British West Indies team where he and his three Jamaican teammates won bronze in the 4x400 relay. Barbadians are being urged to know the risks associated with tsunamis. The advice is coming from the Director of the Department of Emergency Management Kerry Hinds. She was speaking during a ceremony to launch the start of Coastal Hazards and Earthquake Smart Month at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve yesterday. Several groups were present with information on display including the Marine Police Unit, Barbados Coast Guard, the National Disabilities Unit and the Fisheries Division among others. Coastal Planner in the Coastal Zone Management Unit Fabian Hinds says under the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, the plan is to ensure that every constituency along coastal areas is prepared. Organisers of the inaugural Caribbean Music Festival are being praised for raising the standards of entertainment in Barbados. The commendation has come from Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey. He was speaking at the recent launch for the event, which is slated to come off at the Farley Hill National Park on National Heroes Day on April 28. Head of Operations for the show, Tredoana Parris, is promising a one of a kind show with a strong lineup of local, regional and international artistes. The West Terrace Primary School capped off African Awareness Month celebrations in grand style. Besides the usual fashion on show, several beautiful presentations were shared. Principal Ingrid Lashley says these types of celebrations are important, as young people should be aware of their heritage, cultural background and their history. She says more children need to be exposed to the values of their forefathers. Meanwhile, the children spoke about their experience. It will be Pinelands and Burger King Clapham Bulls for the final of the BABA President's Cup. Both teams held off their opponents last night at the Wildey Gym in game two of the semifinals. Pinelands stopped CAM Smart Assurance City United Celtics by 69 aggregate points, while Bulls got by Fusionz Boutique Station Hill Cavaliers by 16. The final between the Pine and Bulls is set for 6:45 p.m. on Sunday at Barbados Community College. Just call him Alex the broom man! He has become a fixture along the busy junction of Collymore Rock and Pine Road, St Michael, where he makes and sells straw brooms. Pointing out that broom-making was a popular tradition in Jamaica, where he was born, Alex admitted he learnt the trade here. “I happened to meet up with this man who makes brooms and by talking and talking I got involved too,” he said, smiling. Alex said while the broom, which is made from palm leaves, was not losing its history, there was a need for more people to become involved in making it. Hilda Skeene are leading both the Girls and the Boys standings of the WIBISCO Freida Nicholls Zone after today's field events programme in the Chefette Frosteez NAPSAC meet. Hilda Skeene lead the Girls with 119 points, from Wesley Hall on 74 and Luther Thorne with 47, while in the Boys, they're out front on 103, Wesley Hall - 44 and Grazettes 42. Then in the Ryan Brathwaite Zone, Blackman and Gollop are leading both sections, tied with Gordon Greenidge in the Girls with 73 points, with Wilkie Cumberbarch 3rd on 63; while in the Boys Blackman and Gollop are ahead on 104, to St. Catherine's 77 and Wilkie's 71.
