Organisers of this year's Agrofest are optimistic about a large turn out as the agricultural showcase gets underway this morning at Queen's Park. Approximately 230 exhibitors are confirmed for this year's exhibition. The number represents an increase when compared to last year's. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society James Paul says so far there're no hiccups and they are ready. He also outlined some of what will be new. Red House emerged as champions when St. George Secondary held their interhouse sports at the school grounds this week. The athletes from Red amassed 1273 points to be crowned winners, while Blue House took the runners-up spot with 1129 points. Adrian Donovan, who says he was Mr. Thorne's right hand man in Christ Church South, feels disrespected by the lack of communication with residents. This year's Naniki Barbados Music Festival will be a tribute to Richard Stoute. The revelation came from Managing Director of Naniki Barbados Tom Hinds as the 2024 event was launched at Naniki. He told the media the two-day event has been moved from a jazz festival to a music festival and the public is in for a treat. Trevor Thorpe reports. Students from the Ellerslie School got a valuable insight into the world of work and the offerings locally as that institution held its annual career showcase. Scores of representatives from Government and private organisations mounted booths across the Black Rock compound, displaying tools and products, while others offered demos or just shared information about their jobs. Principal Andrea Baptiste tells CBC News this is the return of showcase, after a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students shared their thoughts on the expo, including what professions were attractive. Youth Minister Charles Griffith says Government is committed to providing real-life empowerment and employment-related training opportunities for all students. He made the comment as students from the Ann Hill School celebrated their recent participation in the Division of Youth's Pathways initiative, which forms part of its employability programme. Among other things, it exposes students to the world of work. During the event, the students were presented with their certificates and tokens having completed the programme, and Minister Griffith reassured the students it would not be a one-off opportunity. Meanwhile, Principal of the Ann Hill School, Emelda Bell says their aim is to empower students and to equip them with the skills and knowledge essential to independent living. Students Shaquon Alleyne and Shaquan Bancroft spoke on behalf of their colleagues to express gratitude to everyone involved for facilitating the programme. Cavs claimed a 93-58 win over Warrens All Stars led by 24 each from Dijon Hunte and Gavin Phillips. Meanwhile, Bulls were 79-70 winners over Combined Schools Tridents. Government Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight says amendments to the Financial Institutions Bill are intended to strengthen the Central Bank's ability to give guidance and directives to the commercial banking sector on the setting of fees and charges. She adds that it is also to bring the Financial Institutions Act into alignment with the Central Bank Act and the National Payment Systems Act. Also speaking on the Bill was Opposition Senator Tricia Watson, who says it is needed to regulate financial institutions. She says it brings clarity to the legislative powers of the Central Bank. Ms. Watson also spoke of her concern regarding recent data breaches within the banking sector. Set B’s 782 points edged into third (774), while sets D (Green), and C (Blue) fell pace to close on 664, 529, and respectively. Government is committed to supporting entities in the third sector to help them significantly boost their ability to better impact their specific areas of focus. That's according to Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan, who made the remarks during a third sector workshop hosted by his Ministry at the Warrens Office Complex and entitled, 'Governance and Leadership for High Performing Boards'. Minister Jordan adds that Government has therefore started the conversation regarding how that commitment can be made a reality for third sector organisations. Democratic Labour Party political leader and Leader of the Opposition Ralph Thorne, KC, paused in Parliament Yard yesterday before entering the House of Assembly. It was the third time that he was entering the House after crossing the floor and breaking ties with the ruling Barbados Labour Party 11 days prior. The Barbados Film and Television Association has a vision to see film clubs established in every secondary school on the island. This from BFTA President Jamal Slocombe. He anticipates this coming on stream from next year. According to him, the success of this young filmmakers' initiative will provide a platform for meaningful dialogue from which film production in Barbados can thrive. Mr. Slocombe was addressing the BFTA's film forum at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre in Queen's Park. He says although they would be harnessing the talents from the secondary schools they are hoping to start at the Barbados Community College. Mr. Slocombe says they will also be looking to teach young filmmakers the element of business to give them the knowledge and support needed for them to succeed in their respective business ventures.
