Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds has pointed to Barbados' low birth rate and increasing death rate, as just some of the reasons why a mix of interventions, including cross-border movement, must be considered to respond to the situation. He made the comment as he contributed to the Parliamentary Debate on the Caribbean Community (Movement of Skilled Nationals) (Amendment) Bill 2024. Noting that current projections suggest one in two Barbadians will be over the age of 60 by the year 2050, he says widening the tax base will benefit the island and its economy in the long run. Barbados is working on building relations with the Brazilian state of Roraima given its proximity to Guyana. Barbados' Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong says the state has been collectively targeted by Barbados and Guyana with Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley paying visits there. He says the relationship with Roraima comes as Barbados builds ties with Brazil. That country's leader is expected to be the guest of the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, scheduled to take place from February 25 to 28 in Guyana. Ambassador Comissiong is confident linkages being forged between the island with its southern Caribbean neighbours, will grow with the planned regional ferry service linking Bridgetown, Georgetown and Port of Spain. Meanwhile as Barbados pursues its southern Caribbean diplomacy with Guyana and Suriname, Ambassador Comissiong says the island is also looking north, including to Cuba. For the first time, under the auspices and collaboration of the Barbados Export company, Cuba will exhibit some of its products at the upcoming Agrofest. Several other overseas delegations are scheduled to participate in the agricultural expo.
