The proposed legislation to make businesses receiving concessions more accountable for how they treat workers continues to be a major talking point tonight. The Barbados Workers' Union has taken issue with comments yesterday by the Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) on labour issues and the proposed legislation. Chairman of the BPSA Trisha Tannis said they believe the proposed legislation should have been a last resort adding that they remain unaware of any significant prevalence of any employee mistreatment within these sectors that would warrant this legislation. BWU General Secretary Toni Moore however, calls the BPSA remarks disheartening. According to Ms. Moore, this situation is a classic representation of the age-old divide between the haves and the have-nots. Nine years after the headline-making news of the death of six-yearold Jahan King, his still grieving grandmother Enid Browne, wants to know why it is taking so long for the criminal trial to begin. Jahan’s mother, Lasanta Gill and her boyfriend, Dwayne Marshall, were charged on April 25, 2016 with killing him. A post-mortem revealed that the child’s death on June 29, 2015, was as a result of blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen. When the Sunday Sun caught up with Browne, 74, Jahan’s paternal grandmother, at her Deacons Farm, St Michael home last week, she expressed dismay that the trial had not gotten off the ground as she questioned why it was taking so long. The Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) has made its feelings public on the Labour Clauses (Concessions) Bill. The BPSA has made it clear it has no intention of suppressing the rights of workers. However, Chairman Trisha Tannis says they believe the proposed legislation should have been a last resort and only implemented to address widespread mistreatment of employees across various sectors benefitting from concessions. The proposed legislation will allow the Government to shape the minimum terms and conditions of work for businesses operating in sectors receiving concessions. Businesses found in contravention could have their privileges suspended or revoked Ms Tannis says the BPSA has been given the assurance by the Government that they will be given the opportunity to consult on the regulation that will frame the Bill.
