This disclosure from Bishop the Right Reverend Michael Maxwell comes as the Church celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Diocese of Barbados. He made the comment as the Diocese officially launched its anniversary celebrations and activities this morning at the St. James Parish Church. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley wants countries that have caused the climate crisis to continue to step up to the plate. During a panel discussion 'From Pocket to Planet: Scaling Up Climate Finance' at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Ms. Mottley told the forum the climate crisis is global and short term debt will not cut it. She says it will not assist with adaptation or attaining the sustainable development goals. Among the panel was Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Moosa Zameer and US Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, Mr. Kerry says the science points to the climate crisis getting worse. He says once money is deployed countries can win the battle. The Barbados Police Service is on board for the Holetown Festival, with dozens of officers on duty to ensure a safe event. Communications and Public Affairs Officer, Inspector Rodney Inniss anticipates a big crowd, noting the Festival not only impacts on traffic in Holetown but along the Ronald Mapp Highway. Organisers of the 2024 Holetown Festival predict a fantastic weekend as the festival reaches its climax. Jamestown then, Holetown now is the theme for the annual event that commemorates the landing of the island's first English settlers in 1627. Stalls have been erected and vendors are getting ready for the weekend of activities. Public Relations Officer Jamarr Browne told Mornin' Barbados the festival creates opportunities for small business people to make money. The street fair is among the highlights of the Holetown Festival. Planning is already underway for next year's Holetown Festival. A new campaign has been launched to further sensitise students, their parents and teachers about the importance of healthy lifestyles, by urging them to avoid unhealthy food and drinks which can result in developing non-communicable diseases. It's called the Cool School Tour for 2024. Barbados is moving to establish an Independent Statistics and Data Analytics Authority. Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, Marsha Caddle says it will assist the Government in its planning. She shared some insight during the World Governments Summit - an annual that brought together leaders in government for a global dialogue about governmental processes and policies. The minister was among the panel in the United Arab Emirates for a discussion titled, 'Digital Government: A Dream for Some, a Reality for Others'. Minister Caddle says the poly-crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, gave Barbados an advantage as it moves to digitise Government. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley along with the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry have copped this year's Ewald von Kleist Award for their fight against climate change and its security implications. The award will be presented on saturday. Ewald von Kleist was the founder and defining personality of the Munich Security Conference. Through the award, the Munich Security Conference has been honouring leading personalities in security politics who have made an outstanding contribution to international understanding and conflict resolution since the award's inception in 2009. Ms. Mottley expressed appreciation for the recognition. Ms. Mottley was among the panel for a panel discussion at the ongoing Munich Security Conference in Germany titled 'Growing the Pie: A Global Order That Works for Everyone'. She used the forum to shine the spotlight on the increasing debt of developing countries have taken on due to the pandemic and the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ms. Mottley says new metrics are required to help countries manage these risks. Preparations for the start of this year's sugar cane harvest are almost complete, with grinding expected to start some time next month. Word of this from Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Indar Weir. There were expectations that the 2024 sugar cane crop would have started this month. However Minister Weir told CBC News that the engineers have been working steadfastly undertaking some last minute preparations with regards to the placement of the factory boilers among other things. He says he is awaiting a report from the factory engineers in this respect and hopefully he will then be in a better position to speak more definitively on the matter. Minister Weir says talks with the Barbados Workers Union regarding wages and other monetary matters are still ongoing, however this is not a matter which according to him should inhibit the harvesting process. The early closure of schools in recent days has resulted in calls by the Barbados Union of Teachers for the situation to be urgently addressed. The latest, the Lester Vaughan School which closed early today due to "unforseen circumstances". BUT President Rudy Lovell says this is an issue which dates back for years. He says several environmental tests were done over the years but the issue still persists and the teachers continue to be ill. Mr. Lovell says they will be in support of teachers protecting their health and the ball is now in the Ministry's court. At least 15 personnel from the Barbados Defence Force and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital are being trained in hyperbaric medicine thanks to Canada. This as the four-day Diving Medicine Training Course, rolled out by the BDF in collaboration with the Canadian Armed Forces, is underway at St. Ann's Fort. It comes on the heels of last month's recertification of the Hyperbaric Chamber. Apart from providing quick access to professional medical care for diving casualties, Accident and Emergency Physician, Dr. Lisa Holder notes it will be vital in treating other conditions. Command Surgeon of the Canadian Joint Operations Command, Commander Michael Montague, is the Lead Facilitator of the training. He explained the importance of the course. The Hyperbaric Dive Medical Training is the latest in a series of CAF-supported collaborative learning engagements with the BDF before Exercise Tradewinds 2024. Canada's High Commissioner to Barbados, Lilian Chatterjee, has been shedding light on what her country has been doing to date. The organisers of Agrofest have welcomed Guardian Life of the Caribbean as a partner for Agrofest 2024. This was revealed during a site visit for sponsors of the agricultural show slated for Queens Park on February 23. In pointing out the high risks taken by farmers. Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society James Paul the association with the insurance company is the start of a long-term initiative aimed at educating farmers about mitigating risks in their operations. The Agricultural Official says the partnership also serves to raise awareness of young people to agriculture as well as attract new investments. Vice President of Sales at Guardian Life of the Caribbean, Greg Manette called the partnership an excellent opportunity for agriculture and the farming community which could have far-reaching effects for the sector and beyond. Recruitment Officer Claire Garnes says they have been taking advantage of career showcases to promote the programme. The Barbados Youth Advance Corps was formerly the Barbados Youth Service. Several outreaches are planned for February. Career Guidance Officer Fabian Sargeant says the BYAC is diverse, catering to all types of young people.
