Member of Parliament for St. George North Toni Moore has lamented a lack of progress on the issue of increasing the national minimum wage. It was raised to $8.50 in April 2021. At the time, Ms. Moore had described it as an important first step, but suggested it was still too low. She is again calling for the minimum wage to be revisited. Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill says the Labour Clauses (Concessions) Bill, 2024 is not intended to punish anyone. He revealed during meetings with tourism stakeholders in recent months, workers highlighted a long list of issues. They pertained to the receipt of vacation pay and service charge, charging workers for uniforms, the deduction of union dues as well as the issuance of short term contracts. Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong is confident the March 31 deadline for the full free movement of CARICOM nationals can be met. He told Mornin' Barbados member states are currently working to move beyond the movement of skilled nationals with a few exceptions. Barbadians can give more than chocolate and flowers this valentines, as the Blood Bank wants citizens to share the love by donating blood. The Blood Bank is working to restock its supply during a Valentine's Day Blood Drive tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Senior Blood Collection Technician Wendy Lorde says the blood will save lives. She was also guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Ms. Lorde says people with recent tattoos and piercings are deferred for one year. Top blood donor, John Wilson who first started donating blood as a teenager, is reminding people the process is voluntary. He's encouraging citizens to give from the heart. Government has positioned the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS), through its advanced weather forecasting drone technology, as a leader in producing weather forecasting data for the benefit of the region. Word of this from Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams. He says because of this technology and the island's location, Barbados is better positioned to monitor weather systems coming off the African coast. Minister Abrahams made the revelation during the current affairs programme One On One, produced by the Public Affairs Department. He lauded the effort of the Met Services department, noting that they have designed their own weather stations using 3D technology to assist in the measuring of wind speed, rainfall and temperatures. Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan in the face of mounting concerns has stood in defence of the Labour Clauses Concessions Act 2024 brought by Government. He say they are protecting workers. He described the bill as a framework piece of legislation that allows Government to shape the minimum terms and conditions of work for businesses operating in sectors receiving concessions. Mr. Jordan says in discussions with the hotel sector, it became clear there was a need to go beyond just having meetings and no progress. Mr. Jordan says while they receive complaints from workers, decent businesses are also complaining. Ann House is the winner of the St. Michael School Glow Sports for 2024. This year it was dubbed the Jennifer Swanson-Jones classic at Briar Hall. Ann House racked-up 919.5 points, ahead of Elizabeth with 817.5, Bodicea was third with 727 and Victoria in fourth with 694. From emergency medical technician (EMT) to paramedic to assistant ambulance officer, Nigel Arnold “Ernie” Gooding has dedicated more than three decades of his life to caring for others.
