Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has publicly responded to concerns about the Labour Clauses Concessions Bill. The bill, which is to be debated in the House of Assembly this week, seeks to establish minimum rates and conditions for workers, which companies benefiting from tax concessions should adhere to. Speaking during a BLP Christ Church East branch meeting, Ms. Mottley revealed Government foregoes approximately 750 million dollars in revenue each year, as a result of tax concessions. Prime Minister Mottley says Government is simply legislating what has existed under the collective bargaining agreement with labour unions and hoteliers for the past 60 years. She's therefore dismissed suggestions the legislation may act as a deterrent to foreign investors. Yesterday's bombshell revelation of the crossing of the floor by Christ Church South Member of Parliament, Ralph Thorne, continues to reverberate across the local political spectrum. There have been volumes of analysis and much speculation from political scientists to regular Barbadians and the focus tonight has been on the Christ Church East branch meeting which Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley addressed. She said all is well and the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) will continue to provide representation unabridged and uninterrupted to the people of Christ Church South. That was her declaration as she broke silence on the sudden departure of Ralph Thorne from the party. While thanking Mr Thorne for his service to the Barbados Labour Party from 2018 until now, the Prime Minister extended best wishes to him in his future endeavours. She added that other party members are in the dark about Thorne's decision to leave the BLP. Meanwhile, over in St John, the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has not ruled out letting Ralph Thorne back into its fold. DLP leader Dr Ronnie Yearwood says the party will never close its doors to any Barbadian who wants to serve. Questions continue on the Upper House and what the composition of the Senate will be like following the swearing-in of the Opposition Leader tomorrow. We put that question to political scientist Dr. George Belle. He says the Constitution guarantees the leader of the opposition two senate appointments and once sworn in, Ralph Thorne can tell the President who his selections are. The current senate composition came to be as President Dame Sandra Mason made the appointments in the absence of an Opposition Leader. However, these individuals would have to make way for other appointees. Seven young men are to receive training expected to help them become successful entertainers. It's being done through the Build Your Own Door initiative, a component of the National Peace Programme, which was launched yesterday. Six of the participants were previously involved in the Peace Programme's Flip Yuh Script programme where many lamented a lack of opportunities to get a foot in the door in their chosen field -hence the idea to build their own door. One of the facilitators, Ishiaka McNeil, says the other participant who was formerly incarcerated will join the programme in a few days as he seeks to reintegrate into society. Participants will receive training in performance skills and ethics, self imaging and fashion, music theory, personal and professional development, social media presence and music production. At the end of the eight weeks there is to be a showcase. One of the participants Stefan Lemon, a DJ, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Attorney General, Hughland Allman, has heaped praise on the work of the National Peace Programme. Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith believes community-based organisations are absolutely necessary for the cultural landscape of Barbados. Mr. Griffith was speaking at a workshop held by his Ministry at the Radisson Hotel. He says these organisations are pivotal to society's survival as they can reach groups, such as at-risk youth, as well as bring elements to the community that are not there right now. Mr. Griffith has also encouraged the participants to take the information and relay it to their communities so there will be a constant transition of leaders.
