Some Barbadians have been reacting and agreeing with the recent views of Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams about the Customs Law which makes it illegal for civilians to wear camouflage. He made this statement during his contribution to the Debate on the Law Revision and Law Reform (Amendment) Bill, 2024, emphasising that it was his personal view and not that of the Government. A number of Barbadians we spoke to are in agreement that the law needs changing. Barbadians 18 years and over are being called to volunteer for the Barbados Defence Force's Field Medical Hospital. It is a mobile health facility furnished with full medical equipment which can be easily moved and set up in different locations post disasters or when institutions are not fully functional. The call comes as officials seek to acquire another level of accreditation for the hospital which is temporarily based at the National Stadium. More in this report from our Reanne Phillips. Just two weeks after Barbadians complained of significant delays at the traffic lights at the Westmoreland Junction, the matter has been rectified. The backlog was a hot burner topic during Government's Parish Speaks held in St. Lucy last month. Since then, the Electronic Unit of the Ministry of Transport and Works installed new sensors, called loop detectors, at the site. Electrician with MTW's Electronic Unit Glenn Clarke, explained the previous set of loop detectors were ripped off when the road was repaved. Organisers of this year's UWI/RBC Race for the Kids, are hoping to double participation and ultimately funds raised by the event, by securing at least 3000 registrants. Area Vice President of Business Banking with RBC Shimon McIntosh shared that goal during a press launch at the University. UWI Cave Hill Campus Principal Professor Clive Landis stressed the importance of participation, noting the monies raised fund various student initiatives on campus. Guyana's Minister of Agriculture, Zulfiker Mustapha says the agri-food systems of Latin America and the Caribbean are vulnerable and must be transformed. He wants to see the capacity of each country boosted, along with the region. This message was conveyed at the launch of the 38th Food and Agriculture Organisation's 38th Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean. A Barbadian is listed among 12 young leaders from around the world who have made it on the Youth Advisory Panel of the CEO of the Global Centre on Adaptation. Ashley Lashley's selection follows an open call for applications at the end of 2023. The 12 were selected from over 700 applications from 108 countries, based on their experiences in national adaptation action as well as their decision making processes. Lashley, the current Barbados Youth Ambassador to CARICOM and founder of the Ashley Lashley Foundation, will serve on the panel for a year to advise Professor Dr. Patrick Verkooijen on how to take forward the climate adaptation agenda. Given the vulnerability of small island states like Barbados, she tells CBC News she intends to advocate for robust climate resilience and adaptation measures during her tenure. Barbados' Ambassador to CARICOM, David Commissiong says the Inter-Caribbean Direct flight linking the island and Jamaica will help to facilitate diplomatic and trade relations. He is elated to know that a trip to Jamaica will no longer be a whole-day affair. He was on the inaugural direct flight which Inter-Caribbean has started three days a week between Barbados and Jamaica. Ambassador Commisisong is also pleased the flight connects to Cuba. A Barbados delegation is visiting high schools and universities around the U.S. that are involved in medical education. The latest stop for the team which included representatives of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital along with Barbados Consul General to Miami, Rudy Grant was the Waggener High School in Kentucky to talk to students about careers in the medical field. Waggener has a health science academy which prepares students for a future in the medical field. The delegation was impressed with the hands-on learning and work the school and its academies of Louisville are doing to prepare kids for college and career success. Grant has been speaking about the outreach. Richard Chesterfield Small is today thanking two good Samaritans for helping him with a much-need physical makeover. Small, who has been living on the streets close to 30 years, was recently given the assistance by Don Leacock, 27, and Deshannon Robinson, 28, of the Build Up Bim charity, who also solicited the help of business places. Small, who had been in a dishevelled state for many years, received a haircut, shave, new clothes and shoes, as well as a meal. Police are investigating the unnatural death of a 48-year-old man. Police at the District ‘E’ police station received a report on Wednesday at about 7:45 a.m. that the body of an adult male was discovered in a track at Gays, Boscobelle, St Peter. Lawmen responded to the area and discovered the unresponsive body of a male with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Blue House Ran away with the title at the Hilda Skeene Primary School when the final points were tallied this week.
