A local entomologist wants surveillance heightened to protect Barbados from invasive non-endemic species. According to Ian Gibbs, Barbados is seeing new pests each year for the last few years and officials must ensure the invasive non-endemic species do not harm local helpful insects or destroy crops. Mr. Gibbs told the Morning Report that unfortunately the knowledge pool to help deal with these matters has been reduced significantly because of retirement. While those remaining are working hard, some areas need to be topped up. He added with the movement of so much cargo and people into the island now, the control mechanism must be strengthened, especially as relates to holding infested produce at the ports of entry. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Dale Marshall is reassuring citizens the new Cybercrime Bill's goal is not to restrict general free speech. Debate has resumed on the legislation in Parliament today. According to Mr. Marshall, misinformation abounds and social media thrives on it. He's labelled as a red herring, suggestions Government will police social media. Mr. Marshall insists the state has a duty to protect individuals against conduct that's calculated to cause them harm or may result in harm. He says Barbados has not gone against the Budapest Convention. That treaty seeks to address internet and computer crime by harmonising national laws, improving investigative techniques, and increasing cooperation among nations.
