Barbados could as soon as this year, introduce electronic monitoring and a parole system for people who would otherwise be in jail. Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams made the revelation during the latest One-On-One interview produced by the Public Affairs Department. He said the Probation Department is working with the Barbados Prison Service to make it a reality. Minister Abrahams added that the probation system could allow for the early release of eligible prisoners. The number of exhibitors at the annual Girlfriends Expo & Arts Festival continues to reach record levels, says organiser Kimtara Clarke. She has attributed this to the rise in entrepreneurs and small businesses in Barbados. This year the expo, held at Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, saw a record number 200 exhibitors signing up for the weekend event now in its 14th year. Aubrey Grant Pavilion in Gully Hill, St. Michael has officially reopened. The resource centre was closed from last November for renovations and today it was reopened in the presence of Member of Parliament for St. Michael South Central Marsha Caddle. Speaking at the event, she applauded the volunteers that worked on the pavilion and stated that efforts such as these show signs of a strong community. Ms. Caddle also called for more collaborations like these moving forward to fix even more community centres across the island. Great White Sharks were crowned champions when the Grantley Prescod Primary School held their annual sports yesterday. The airport will need to continue to build its capacity due to increased arrivals from airlines such as Delta, along with the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. That's according to Chief Executive Officer at the Grantley Adams International Airport Hadley Bourne. Mr. Bourne says he and his team have a plan in place to deal with the demand. He has also provided an update on plans for the ICC World Cup. Mr. Bourne believes the country has the capacity to pull off another major tournament. Delta Airlines is returning to the shores of Barbados. The announcement was made today at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.'s offices. The first flight will touch down on November 21 this year. Fred Finn has the enviable record of being the world’s most travelled person, also holding the Guinness World Record for most flights on the Concorde with an impressive 718 trips and 22 370 000 kilometres travelled. The 83-year-old British-born flew on the aviation industry’s most recognised commercial jet between 1976 and 2003, sitting in Seat 9A on every trip. Tourism, education and private sector officials have welcomed a strategic initiative with the Florida International University (FIU) Chaplin School of Hospital and Tourism Management, which will enhance the training of workers in the tourism and hospitality industry in Barbados and the wider Caribbean. The Barbados Hospitality Professional Programme was launched on Thursday at the Villages At Coverley, Christ Church, the location chosen for the university’s first three interactive courses aimed at improving hospitality skills, producing better team leaders and helping elevate guest experience. A year into their existence, the Caribbean Unity Table Tennis Club is seeing great progress in participation and the impact it is making in the community. The brainchild of former national player Kevin Farley and Minister in the Attorney General's Office with responsibility for Crime Prevention Corey Lane, the club was formed to aid in keeping children of vulnerable communities off the streets and participating in sports, in particular table tennis. With just over 80 people now involved in the club, there are two locations - at Haggatt Hall and Passage Road. Having participated successfully in a number of local and regional tournaments, 2024 will see the drive to be even more involved at the competitive level. King House (Green) defended their title as interhouse champions when the Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary held its sports day. King captured 683 points for the top spot, while Hurley House (Yellow) finished second with 624. Third place went to Williams House (Blue) who claimed 523 points and fourth was Payne House (Red) with 427. A 40, 000 dollar donation has been made to help provide care packs for women in the gynaecological ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital thanks to two charities. The Katrina Endometriosis and Women Health Association in conjunction with the Massy Foundation made the donation of fifty care packs in the first instance but the funds will provide monthly donations. Senior Nursing Officer for the Women and Children Directorate, Andrea Scott, expressed thanks to both charities and outlined how the care packs would be used for the patients. This was the first donation for the Katrina Endometriosis and Women Health Association for the year. President and Executive Director Katrina Alleyne says the Endodrive helps many.
